The big government mentality in simple words

Calling soda the new tobacco, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will introduce legislation this fall that would charge a fee to retailers that sell sugary beverages.
It makes sense for the government to help people to make the right choices
There it is. The government is here to "help" each individual to make the right choices.

This is the main ideological flaw with big government worshippers. They think the government is here to make decisions on the individual level when their job is to make administrative decisions for running the state.

Are they now gonna go after ihop and their pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream? Are they gonna tax the ice-cream trucks going about in the burbs?

    How about dominos pizza?

This reminds me of that movie where Stallone went into the future and all foods were in pill form and it was only what you needed, it was illegal to consume extra amounts of salt, etc.

I just think that's a fundamental flaw with the pro-big-government crowd.

I was reading about the proposed Soda Tax as a means to pay for government-run healthcare. Why stop there? Cookies, ice cream, chips.... heck then we need to go after the ingredients used to make these things because then people will circumvent the tax by making their own. So add to that list sugar, flour, eggs, butter, milk.... hey what about beef? Really bad for your cholesterol. Need to tax that to cut down on consumption and save people! STUPID. Taxing food items is not an answer and it doesn't teach anyone anything. Everyone already knows these things are not good choices.

That is the big government way unfortunately.

    1. See a personal problem: People are too fat!
    2. Implement a bad or inefficient strategy that you have no business doing: Tax sodas!
    3. Lament that the plan isn't working so we need more extensive measures: Hey, wee need to tax "insert something else"
    4. Feel good about "helping" people
    5. Lament the grossly unbalanced budget and failing businesses affected by your plans
    6. Use taxdollars to monkey around further with the economy: We need to subsidize the sugar industry and tax the rich!

    I almost forgot #7.

Makes you wonder how soon it will be illegal to play sports in America, as they cause injuries requiring health care that could be avoided.

Ya know, you're on to something there.

Either that or OSHA will get involved and they'll mandate padded suits making athletes look like the Michelen man!
