    British 'Independent' newspaper:
'The demise of the US dollar'

In a graphic illustration of the new world order, Arab states have launched secret moves with
China, Russia and France to stop using the US currency for oil trading

In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning – along with China, Russia, Japan and France – to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar.
Secret meetings have already been held by finance ministers and central bank governors in Russia, China, Japan and Brazil to work on the scheme, which will mean that oil will no longer be priced in dollars.
The plans, confirmed to The Independent-UK by both Gulf Arab and Chinese banking sources in Hong Kong, may help to explain the sudden rise in gold prices, but it also augurs an extraordinary transition from dollar markets within nine years.

Against the background to these currency meetings, Sun Bigan, China's former special envoy to the Middle East, has warned there is a risk of deepening divisions between China and the US over influence and oil in the Middle East. "Bilateral quarrels and clashes are unavoidable," he told the Asia and Africa Review. "We cannot lower vigilance against hostility in the Middle East over energy interests and security."
This sounds like a dangerous prediction of a future economic war between the US and China over Middle East oil – yet again turning the region's conflicts into a battle for great power supremacy.

All the more reason to stop importing oil. If we were able to do that, our dollar would rebound sharply. What I propose is a $5 per barrel fee on imported oil.. with it going up $1 a year. This would allow gov't to drop its subsidy of domestic oil companies. The result would be reduced oil consumption, increased incentives for fuels from biomass, and a big reduction in the deficit. Not to mention a dollar rebound.

DRILL HERE. DRILL NOW! Drill and explore American oil. The Fed gets incredible royalty when producing oil and gas on it's own land and it also gets to tax the income off of state and individuals lands as well. It's a win-win except in a liberals mind. IT"S SO FREAKING SIMPLE IT HURTS TO SEE LIBERALS SCREW IT UP SO BAD!!!

But you are stealing the intended thread as usual. Now back to the naive empty suited Obama and his lack of understanding of economics and the American dollar (unless he's allowing this to happen on purpose).

What I'm proposing would encourage oil exploration in the USA. Nothing is preventing the oil companies from drilling here and drilling now.

Oil companies have plenty of leases.

Besides, Tyler, you seem to be missing the point again. The USA needs to stop sucking on the oil teat, it's not like we can drill our way out of our dependence on foeign oil.

I guess you haven't heard about global warming either.

I can't understand why the left opposes nuclear power as an energy alternative. Europe relies heavily on nuclear energy, why can't we?

Because the US jumped off that bandwagon after 3 Mile Island. TARP wouldn't even begin to cover the cost in getting new nuclear plants up and running in the sufficient amount needed for the US right now, and the planned growth.

And nuclear waste is a big, big, big problem too.

Re: The demise of the dollar

I do agree with Salty that us getting off of our dependence on foreign oil would solve a myriad of problems ranging from economic to national security to the environment. If we could be the first to really do it, it could be like the industrial revolution all over again. We need to win this race. This needs to be a huge priority. I still think we need to drill more in the USA during the interim than Salty would probably like but overall I agree on the importance of this mission.
