You think republicans are the answer?

    Think again.

There was just a 98-0 vote in the senate.

The new bill will provide 14 weeks of addition unemployment to all states and those states with high unemployment, 8.5% or higher, will see an additional 20 weeks of unemployment. The outlook for the jobs market continues to look bleak as the jobs report on Friday is expected to show that 175,000 additional jobs were cut in the month of October.

Obviously they are not. When you have leadership backing the far left Republican candidate (more liberal than the Democrat) in the recent 23rd of NY, it shows the problems lay much deeper than the candidates themselves. It is a systemic condition for both parties, the needs of the party come before the needs of the nation. Steele has come out and blasted Palin (of whom I am not a huge fan) for getting involved in the 23rd. He said he only cares about electing Republicans. Just shows he is just as out of touch as the rest of them. Unfortunately, a lot of people think the problems are all with "those other guys" in the other districts and keep re-electing their own incumbent. When you add it up, nothing ever really changes. :bigcry:

I don't think Republicans are the answer, but I'm not following your logic. What's wrong with extending unemployment benefits when the job market looks bleak?

Because taking $100 from a taxpaying worker and giving to somebody not working doesn't give the non-worker any reason to work.

Then, since that $100 is debt, it will take $120 to pay off later.

Americaa is losing money on the deal and we can't continue crap like this while so deep in the red.

We already extended unemployment with federal funding on top of what states normally pay out. Hell, why don't we just extend them indefinitely.

The unemployment program is a safety net for workers, not a way to fix the economy (and it WON'T fix the economy). When you have a prolonged recession like we have, it breaks the system. We need to stop pouring more money into a bad system.

It takes a horse to pull the cart.

Politics! This one would come back to haunt any politician during the re-election. None of them own a set.

But the job market is bleak. What are the millions of unemployed going to do if there is nowhere to work? They are not abusing the system.... they don't have a place to work.

This is a different time in America. The unemployed are people who worked in construction, real estate, financial industries, etc... Business is down. Banks aren't lending money. People aren't building... they are saving.

Most of this was directly caused by government policies. Forecasters are saying it may be 2 years before the financial industry begins hiring again. I personally think it will be much longer than that.

I think the government knows where this is headed. They are trying to keep home foreclosures from increasing. They want to keep the homeless numbers down. It won't fix the economy, but it will keep people in their homes a little longer and all we can do is hope the country rebounds before the benefits run out.

The government is bankrupt, true. But it's not because of unemployment benefits.

Yes, it's the government trying to manipulate the economy. You said it yourself, gov policies make it worse.

What if the recession is 3 more years? Do you extend them that far?

No. If it lasts 3 more years, America will become a 3rd world country. We'll look alot like Mexico. The dollar will collapse and we will have a new currency in place. The government will have total control of the people.

Lower taxes on personal income. Lower taxes on business. Eliminate capital gains taxes. Allow insurance companies to do inter state business.

    Fiscal conservatism is the answer.
