Look, Oakes didn't do well as an AD, but his experience as an AD gives him some cred as a voter.

Except that I would argue that his years as an AD give him too much bias towards teams and conferences he is more familar with (even if he isn't actively trying to change the results to help any one team or conference).

I do agree that he is as qualified as any other former AD. And I'd rather have him voting than any other former AD.

But former ADs should not be voting. Of course - current coaches should not be voting either.

Which is why all the voters don't come from one conference.

A couple of years ago when we were preparing to play Kansas, Jim Oakes announced that he had tried to get a BCS school like Kansas to come play in Ruston, but they wouldn't do it. Later that same week, Kansas AD Lew Perkins was quoted in the newspapers saying he couldn't believe Jim Oakes had not even asked for a return game, because he and Kansas were perfectly prepared to travel to Ruston. Perkins was quoted saying something to the affect "I was shocked that Oakes didn't even ask for a return game".

Perkins' statement pretty much threw Oakes under the proverbial bus.
