16.6875 fouls per game vs 21.25 fouls per game.
No you are thinking right -
He is a quality ref and is on TV quit alot - and if you noticed he teaches the refs with less experience on his crew when he thinks they might have missed a call -
Case in example - against USU when Kyle got called for a foul up top by the short black ref, Kelly explained that it actually should have been the other way because the USU guard pushed off of Kyle with his forearm into Kyle's neck - and all this was done during the next dead ball time out...

Kelly Self did not have his best night in the last game although it wasn't real bad. He missed a couple of calls and he made at least one holding call against us that was not consistent with what he had been doing all night. However, all in all, he is a good referee. He's one that lets the players control the outcome of the game. He is one of the refs that you can usually count on to call a good game.
I had to take a few minutes and think back but you are right. We have had some really good officials at home this season. Most of them have years of experience.
We had one game early in the year with Steve Welmer, Bruce Hicks, and Kelly Self as the officials. Welmer and Hicks get to ref deep into the NCAA tournament each year and Self is a good ref. This is quite an elite crew. NO I don't remember every officials name but there are some I see in Ruston or on TV a lot so I know their tendencies.
The worst officials I've seen this year were at the nlu game in Monroe. I don't recall ever seeing them but they were bad. Consistent, but consistently bad.
The refs are an important part of the game. When I enter any game I always look to see who is assigned. I can usually tell from looking at them how things will go. With guys like Magnum, referee familiarity with him and athletes like him is important. That's why it important for TECH to have experienced refs who have officiated awesome athletes.
I think the refs at the Nevada game did a good job overall but they were the poorest of the crews this season because of their lack of calls early on Babbitt. He caught onto this and had several obvious fouls they ignored. It finally caught up to him though and he fouled out. Had they called the early fouls on Babbitt, the outcome of the game may have been different. I don't know if it would have benefited the DAWGS or not.
