Just read this:
AT&T customers can donate the money to the Red Cross International Relief fund by sending a text message with the word "HAITI" to 90999.
Facts are a little off. The strongest ever recorded - 9.5 - happened in Chile May 22, 1960. Thisnone doesn't even make the top 25.
However, it could end up being in the top 10 in death total.
Are there any Haitian students, faculty & or any other connections @ Tech? I wonder what our institution could do?
Jubru, if you google "Worst earthquake 200 years", you will find countless articles that refer to the Haiti earthquake. I assume they mean that it is the worst quake in 200 years locally. The wording could be improved.
I know, I've read them. And they are wrong. It may be the worst to strike Haiti in 200 years, but they are making it out as the worst in the world, when it's not.
What's sad is the pathetic quality of the buildings there. If you wanna know how to build shit for earthquakes, go to Japan. I lived there, and we'd get a 5.0 and not even miss a beat. Yeah I about crapped myself the first time we got a really big one like that, but pretty much no one cared there. They do get the HUGE ones sometimes, but they don't totally annihilate the place like they did Haiti, that's for sure. What a shame...
How often does Haiti get earthquakes? And what makes you think they could afford such technology and building materials? They are the POOREST nation in the western hemisphere. Even after years of US support, they're still way behind in everything.
Oh I know, they are EXTREMELY poor in Haiti. They've hardly really even been a nation in recent history, with all the corruption and unrest. It's a very hopeless place. It's quite a head-scratcher to try and figure out how to really save that place on a long-term basis. I hope someone will figure that out now that so much focus is on the country, and that this earthquake ends up being sort of a blessing in the long run.
