I understand what you're saying. It makes sense. While I do not agree with the alleged behavior of Edwards off the field, I can't justify that keeping him from the Hall of Fame. We're talking about the FOOTBALL Hall of Fame. What is done on the field is what counts. Winning the favor of a group of people who may or may not want you in there is not what it's all about.
But let's say it is. His language and attitude are of little to no significance when compared to his football accomplishments. There comes a point where you have to put the personal feelings/prejudices behind you and admit that he's one of the best players to come through our program. A phenomenal player. A player worthy of a Hall of Fame status at this university. In 20 years, nobody will remember Troy Edwards for flipping off the boosters or cursing. He will be remembered as one of the best players who ever wore a Bulldog uniform.
Yelling at a player, whether a Dawg or opponent, gets you what you get.........It is not a Miss Congeniality contest, it is the Tech Hall of Fame.....he deserves to be in there. He was an incredible college talent.
Watch his youtube clips and everyone can see why he should be in the hall of fame - he was a major talent. I still remember the Cal game in Shreveport and how they started with little respect for us and Troy. By the end of the game their DB's where double covering Troy and helping him up after plays. I can't remember the name but I think Cal had a big time WR too but Troy was the best player on the field that day.
Isn't Mike Green robbed of this honor too?
I couldn't disagree more. If you want to recognize athletic achievement only, publish a list of the statistical leaders in all categories. But if you want to have a hall of fame for athletes, that should include how they have represented the university on and off the field.
Many of the inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame never stepped onto the field as athletes. Some of our HOF'ers were only fair athletes but their support of the program for and the university for decades and their exemplary lives were such as to set them apart. There have been some tremendous athletes come through Tech. To make their performance at Tech the only criteria would mean we would have a very lengthy list of HOF'ers.
No way Troy Edwards should be in the discussion for Tech HOF before Mike Green...let's not even go there.
For what it's worth he is included on the dawgzilla video before games.
In 20 years he might get into the HoF then!
Seriously though, character should count for something. But that's not to say that if you were a puck ass kid with an attitude you can't one day grow up and be an asset to society. It sounds as if Troy had a little bit of an attitude as a KID. Has Troy become a MAN that can be looked up to? To me, that makes a difference.
IMO, to be in any HoF this question must be answered. Are you remembered more for your on the field accomplishments or your off the field antics?
Who should be the next leatherhead in the Tech HOF?
Tilley?
Stover?
