Dawg80 is right about playing for the full 40 minutes. We play in streaks and that doesn't cut it against a better WAC this year. All but 2 teams in the WAC have the ability to come back even if they are down by 20 to us. FFA is right about turnovers. That is something that we CAN learn, though, and need to really practice against aggressive press - foul and hit in practice, because that is what happened last night.
Intesity is what Spoon coaches and it works. We are in much better shape than we were at this time last year - Of Course! However, a turnaround doesn't happen in the flash of an eye or a half season. Spoon and Park know what they are doing, but the players have to step up.
Johnson stepped up last night and, if you watched, Dowdell stepped up as well (she was hacked, held, and fouled all night long - anyone can shut down a strong player when they do that - yet she still got her double-double).
The key is for our guards to be real threats from the outside. Zone works on us, because other teams know that we are going inside first. They dare us to take those outside shots. Got to hit those shots.
I hope that we have/will recruit a pure shooter on the outside. We need that consistency.
Ross ate our lunch, of course Pringle guarding her was called for every foul possible - 3 of them were NOT possible fouls.
The end has not happened and I know that some are so angry that they are saying it has. We are 2 games behind Fresno. We play them at Tech and that could bring us within one game of them, if we win out. Fresno will falter down the stretch on an away game in addition to, hopefully, ours.
Besides, the ONLY thing that matters is the WAC tournament. The WAC regular season champ gets a nice trophy that means nothing. We have to concentrate on the next game - one game at a time. Keep fighting and hope that Spoon and Park can get this team developed into a well oiled machine.
We won't see a 1990's Tech team for a while, so those expecting that are delusional. We have a long way to go. However, getting back the the NCAA's is not beyond our reach. It will take giving it all we have and leaving it all on the floor. We didn't do that last night or at several other games this year (MState, USU, and even some of the wins that we let the other team get back in the game).
Improve outside shooting and intensity - those are the goals. Spoon can only do so much. The players have to step up and do it now. They have the tools to win the WAC and WAC tournament. Reel off a good win streak until the tournament and we get a good seed.
I am still angry about the refs last night. I will repeat that it was not only the fouls called, but mostly the fouls NOT called. Dowdell should be pissed as Hell this morning and I hope she uses that for the rest of the season. If I had been her last night, I would have recieved a technical more than once due to the no-calls.
However, we need to use that anger and go forward. Take no one for granted and fight till that final buzzer sounds. No let up! I predict that we defeat Fresno at Tech and don't lose another WAC game this year.
Our girls will use this and go forward with a chip on their shoulders. The Beast will be unleashed!
