Not a bad idea but exactly how much money are we talking about? My understanding is that most of the deficit is coming from not collecting enough taxes in order to pay for the ordinary cost of government and that the unspent stimulus isn't a major portion of the deficit now or in the years to come.

Again, the facts speak for themselves.
One fact is that Slick had a GOP Congress reining him in his last six years, something that BHO may well get in 11 short months. The other comparable fact is that GWB was saddled with a Congress led by Nancy and Dingy his last two years when things really started to go downhill.

You are right that tax revenues are 50% of the calculation of the deficit. However, spending is the other 50%. The level of federal spending projected by the Obama administration is irresponsible. According to Recovery.gov, about $250 billion of the $787 billion stimulus bill has been paid out. If that money was given back to the Treasury, it would significantly reduce the projected deficits for FY 2009-2010.

I would also point out that it's becoming much more difficult for Obama to blame these record deficits on Bush. Obama likes to say that he "inherited" a trillion dollar deficit. Yet, Obama owns about 90% of this deficit. Obama has full ownership of the $787 billion 2009 stimulus bill. Meanwhile, the Obama administration recently estimated that the $700 billion TARP program enacted under Bush will only cost the taxpayers approximately $141 billion over 10 years. The math is pretty simple.

So what is Obama proposing that we do with the recouped TARP money? That's right, spend it again on another stimulus bill!

What an idiotic thing to say. Deficits are simple acounting -money coming in minus money going out. Money that is not spent is, dollar for dollar, equal to money that is collected. If government were not so big, they would not require as much money to keep it going. Making it bigger just makes the whole system less sustainable.

Well, that is true. It is also true that if you cut off both your legs the total amount of blood in your circulation system would be reduce and that, therefore, you would need to drink less Irish whiskey in order to become drunk.

But I suppose both events are not likely to occur. Reducing US government spending is like next to impossible, Guiss.
When was the last time it occurred and by what percentage and for how long?

Salty I'm with Guiss on this one. We only need to go back to the horse and carriage days way of thinking and we wouldn't need a big government at all. Yep, I'm with Guiss on this one.
