I know Spangler is popular on this board, but he has shown little ability to adapt to game-time situations and has often run ineffective defensive schemes. For those who allege that he has been limited by personnel, I would cite SMU vs. Nevada last year as exhibit "A". SMU does not have overall better defensive personnel than Tech yet was able to neuter Nevada's offense in a way they we have only dreamed about.
The defense has shown steady statistical improvement under Spangler, but it has not made any critical improvements necessary to be a legitimate WAC championship contender.
Exhibit A is a much different situation than playing Nevada in a season game. Having a month to prepare against an offense which is missing two of its top players, per previous posts, is very different. I have yet to see anyone say that Spang is limited by his personnel. No SMU does not have better personnel, however, a month to prepare for anyone is a huge leg up.
Seriously? Two of thier top offensive players are out. One due to injury another due to grades and you want to credit the SMU defense?
What does that say about Alabama's defense since they were able to destroy Texas. Especially since Texas was playing without Colt McCoy?
I hope Spang can shake-up some schemes if he is going to remain the DC.
Antonio Baker, Deon Young, Tank Calais, Terry Carter, etc was a good talent pool for such bad overall pass defense. I know about bend don't break defense, the "playing on an Island" bit, etc. But perhaps that style could be improved upon by chaning some things. Or by using some PRESS which many prominent members of the board have stated.
I think it is nice how members of BB&B step up and take care of each other. I am glad to be a part of a community where some members will sacrifice personal fortune to help the not-so-fortunate members support the ongoing adminstration costs of this forum. Almost brings a tear to my eye...
Jordan Mills on choosing Tech:
“It’s a great experience seeing them play. It was a good atmosphere. The fans stood up the whole game and never sat down. They have a great fan base.”
OK, with all that knowledge and conversation, are we all in agreement that Spang is "IN" i. e. "made the cut"?????
