so after everyone plays one game, half the country is tied for first and half for last?

Theoretically, if every team played one and only one game, then yes. But in reality, that will never happen. Some teams will play a 3-game tournament before other teams will play a single game. There is also an odd number of DI teams.

Plus, there is a home/away factor (a small one). So if every team played on the opening day, you'd have 1/4 of the teams (who won on the road) tied, then the 1/4 who won at home, then the 1/4 who lost on the road, then the 1/4 who lost at home I think.

So does point spread play a part in the RPI scoring system? Also based on your answer that a human has decided that a away win is more valuable than on home win.

No. No point spread. And yeah, obviously a human designed the formula and decided how much each factor would count.

But like Bob said, designing the formula is the only part that is subjective. After that, it's all wins and losses (and to a small extent, where the game was played).

We have several threads in this forum that break it down fairly well.

RPI = 0.25*(Adjusted win %) + 0.5*(Opp win %) + 0.25*(Opp opp win %)
