    U of Hawaii Money Woes

I was visiting my daughter in Maui and picked up the local Maui newspaper. It mentioned U of H was going to be in the red this year by $10.1 Million. The article said just last year the athletic department ran over $2.0 million in debt. They are not getting enought revenue from football and basketball ticket sales.

The state of Hawaii is in big money woes and have cut back school to 4 days per week.

I wonder where this will lead to if this keeps up?

Woah, i've heard of school districts threatening that when they had the gas crisis a bit back, but that's nuts.
Suggestion! Have the football game at Tech! Doesn't the ESPN game give us some $$$? Just saying, we looked good last year against them!

There was some serious talk around campus last year of this happening at Tech. Stinks for them, though. I hope they can pull through it all.

Politically speaking, Hawaii is a blue state. They made their own bed. Let them lie in it. :icon_wink:

Listening to Bobby Curran, it is ridiculous how Hawai'i has allowed itself to be tied down and is losing revenues to other sources. Not surprising I guess with a blue state government.

Concerts can't be held in the Stan Sheriff Center because of the agreement made when it was first built to protect the old Blaisdell Arena...lost revenue to the university.

Hawai'i doesn't get Aloha Stadium parking, concessions, merchandising, or even in-stadium signage revenues for football games.

There is a push to get a student athletics fee to eliminate the deficit and then transfer excess profits back to the university general fund.

Hawaii is a very liberal state, no wonder they are in the mess they are in...heck, it's Obama's "birth" state. Well, either that or Indonesia.

Hawaii subsidizes a portion of visiting teams' travel costs in football, basketball & baseball as a part of its membership agreement with the WAC. If they cannot pay this, then some of their crap rubs off on us.

    EAT MORE PINEAPPLE ! ! !

It was talked about before the recession. I think it is one of those things that is always on the table but never done.

It sucks for Hawaii b/c their biggest advantage and disadvantage is their geography.

Its not hard to find these articles about many non-AQ's in their own states facing these uncertain futures because of budgets. There was another article somewhere about the state of Nevada facing big holes and some of the focus for fixing went to BOTH UN-Reno and UNLV. Some on the WAC Fan Forum are saying that their press is over-hyping the situation but the fear is real. And with California in its budget woes, athletics at the non-PAC 10 schools is an area of focus.

And despite our progress in our program, I don't doubt that our state will give all schools who are NOT LSU a long look. Especially with some not wanting us to get any closer to their cherished program.

and Louisiana the red is not in the red. You people are so stupid some times. Every state is hurting no matter how you feel about politics. The south is hurting more than anybody.
