With every state in the Union facing a budget crisis, I think we'll soon start to see many more schools drop down in classification. This could be a double edged sword for us. Will this open up opportunities for us? Will the WAC, MWC, and CUSA survive the crisis in their current forms? There has already been talk of extreme measures being taken in Nevada and Hawaii. Tulane has talked in the past of eliminating football altogether. One way or the other, the fortune's of many schools will turn as a result of this crisis.

Its one of the most stable, read a WSJ article about home prices, jobs, etc...
parents can't even find a decent priced home in the middle of nowhere, i seriously think the oil revenue must have helped stabilize somewhat even when the economy tanked.

Real estate in the dallas burbs aren't too bad, compared to other places. I could get more of a house in my in-laws 'hood in McKinney than I could for a comparable 'hood in Shreveport.

I wouldn't be suprised, both parents are profs. at some small D3 school in the middle of nowhere (of which town i can never remember), you know the kind that has an applebee's as the place to be (not that there's anything wrong with, its just .. small).
They just left WV which tanked, the town was an extension of D.C., had a train station to it (for the people who don't want to live in DC and cant afford the suburbs around it), and cut the line there. Sold their home for 2/3 of what they bought it for (after doubling at one point, such is life i guess).

The State is asking the Universities to make some fairly serious cuts. Probably not like other states, but we're still looking at cuts.

But Texas, unlike Louisiana has raised tuition and doesn't pay for everyone to go to college. The Louisiana model does not work, as the State pays for kids to go to college, but doesn't fund the college to the levels necessary. Heck, Tech is almost not a public school anymore.

Interesting comment, in fact, I just read where Tech receives less than 1/3 of their annual budget from the state. It's in one of the "Alumni Foundation" website documents.

In Hawaii, at the h.s. level, teachers are being told to take "every other Friday off" ----> unpaid! That saves the high schools in Hawaii tons of money and the state budget tons of money...
To replace these teachers, service members in our military are being sent to teach at these schools as their salaries are "federal" and they have to "teach" once a month which is one of those two Fridays per month!
18 "furlough" (spelling?) days this school year and 24 furlough days next year per teacher/staff member at all HI High Schools.

True. But I am prod of being last in that list and have e-mailed that one around already, to lspoo alums, poking fun at another example of how they are taking advantage of the tax paying citizens of Louisiana. They don't need that money. They have been a bunch of quiet corndogs after reading it. Heck, their revenue from athletics alone was something like $78MM a couple of years ago. They are a open sore on the state as they rob from the other universities. Just another in the long line of reason I hate lspoo.

In case you haven't been able to tell, our FEDERAL government has been a blue state for years. Especially in the area of finance.

We are currently all being tucked under the sheets...
