    Payton antagonizing Jerry Jones

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...ine/index.html

I smell a nice rivalry cooking.

On Friday night, the Saints' staff at the combine gathered in a private room at St. Elmo Steakhouse, an 108-year-old Indy landmark, for a final celebratory nod to the Super Bowl win over the Colts. This is a group that likes its wine, and likes to have fun.

At the restaurant, word passed that Dallas owner Jerry Jones would have his Dallas group in this exact room Saturday night for a team dinner. Jones had even phoned ahead, according to a waiter, to make sure a magnum of a wine he loved, Caymus Special Selection cabernet sauvignon, was ready to be served at dinner.

Sean Payton told the waiter he'd like to have that wine, too. The waiter told him: Sorry, sir. We have only one bottle left, and it's reserved for Mr. Jones.

Payton said he'd like to have the bottle nonetheless. I assume there was much angst on the part of the wait staff at that point. My God! Who do we piss off? One of the most powerful owners in the NFL, or the coach who's the toast of the NFL, the coach who just won the Super Bowl?

Here came the bottle of Caymus Special Selection, and the Saints' party drained it.

But drinking Jones' wine wasn't enough. Payton gave the waiter some instructions, took out his pen ... and, well, the Cowboys party found at the middle of their table the next evening an empty magnum of Caymus Special Selection cabernet sauvignon, with these words hand-written on the fancy label:

    WHO DAT!
    World Champions XLIV
    Sean Payton

That's the kind of thing Jones will get a big laugh out of. And remember.

The funny thing is that this bothers some people. I promise you they had another bottle by the next night AND I am pretty sure Jerry Jones got a big kick out of it.

No doubt, Payton used to work for him, so you know that he knew which wine to specifically ask for, and you know that restaurant surely had another bottle waiting for Jones. It is a funny gesture because you know Jerry thought that crap was funny.

Not a cheap prank to pull at $297 a bottle.

As if that was going to happen. JJ can have wet dreams about that every night but it was never going to happen. He blew it by not seeing Payton's upside and not signing FA's Drew Brees, Darren Sharper, Vilma, or cowboy's own Fajita and Shanle or UDFA's Pierce Thomas and not drafting 7th round pick WR Colston or our 6th round pick KR Garret from SMU or 2nd round pick CB Tracey Porter 2 years ago and the tons of others that made this Super Bowl team etc... because he couldn't see their upside either.

Now you are going a bit too far. Fujita and Shanle?? We didn't re-sign them because they aren't as good as what we have. And they still aren't. Vilma is awesome though. We had Parcells when Payton was here. You think when he had never had a HC gig you were going to fire a multiple SB Champion coach to hire an unproven OC?? Sorry that wouldn't have happened no matter who the owner was. (at any team)

You act like every team in the league was after those FA's and draft picks and JJ just decided that they weren't good enough. You also act like there aren't tons of FA's or draft picks the Saints took a pass on and none of them became succesful. The league is littered with stars that everyone including the Saints took a pass on.

The fact is JJ missed on everyone of those guys I mentioned and their upside potential that was exibited this past year.

Shanle and Fujita blow, no doubt.

Yep, that is the krux of the matter in the NFL. The teams that have good years and can stay good for a few years are those that can develop talent and draft well. The FA market and lottery in the draft is so bid up that you can never get the value out of those guys. Value comes in the form of Colston, Thomas, Evans, and guys like that. The only way you can win with a salary cap. Let these guys play out their rookie contracts, keep the guys that are not easily replaced, and develop other talent that can replace those that you think you can.
