JL, that was a very entertaining and informative article. Thanks alot for writting it. Also, thanks alot to Snapdawg for the donation to LTAC.
I know it's fun, but talk of joining some elite conference is total nonsense if we can't beat the likes of a Navy or USM. Let's worry about the things that are in our control first.
Winning DEFINITELY must happen, but there are other things in our control - $$$, facilities, vision, and building a larger fan base. THOSE are the things that SOMETIMES go along with winning, but can be done regardless of the record. Winning just helps it go faster.
Our aim should ALWAYS be an AQ conference. It is silly not to shoot for that. Building toward that is the ultimate goal. So, I don't think any of this is nonsense. I think it is nonsense to NOT think about it and be aiming for it.
Remember all the nay sayers when we started working toward what was then called 1A Football. Some laughed (especially our neighbors to the East) and some said it could be done with a lot of hard work. The work was put in and we got it. Now we are a bcs program. The next goal OBVIOUSLY is AQ.
Let's make sure we handle Grambling before we start penciling in TEXAS A&M.
Beyond that, I think the game against Southern Miss is critical to our future success. They are a direct recruiting adversary...both geographically and in the caliber of recruits we both chase. This game is huge.
We're biting off big chunks against Navy and A&M. Doable....but the percentages aren't pretty and the vegas line will reflect that.
C-USA invite is what I'm hoping for.
Doesn't hurt for folks to dream big, but you need to also be grounded in reality if you're going to survive.
BCS conferences look for several things:
-TV market
-What you bring to the table athletically(across all sports)
-Academic Prestige (for Federal Research Grant purposes)
Some programs may appear to be a weak link, but they actually represent the conference very well in other sports.
Some programs have huge television markets (Mizzouri).
The Big 10 would like to steal Texas or Mizzouri for inclusion in those Academic Research dollars as well as for the TV sets.
