    Techster Recruiting

Any word on recruiting? I've been somewhat dissappointed that we aren't hearing of key signings for next season and 2011-12. There are only 3-4 top 100 prospects that are undeclared, one being a big girl out of Kentucky.

    Does anyone have information??

We signed 3 girls out of a JC in Florida. You'd have to go back in the archives to find them.

These are great solid players and you gotta love this:

Hardy is a 5-foot-9 combo guard who played at Central Florida Community College last year before transferring to Indian River State College prior to this season. She averaged 11.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 49 percent from the field, 71 percent from the free throw line and an incredible 59 percent (66-111) from the three-point line. "Brittany is an unbelievable talent," Weatherspoon said. "She can play the one or the two guard spot for us. She is a great shooter; very consistent with her jump shot. She is very good at getting everyone around her involved, and she likes to push the basketball in transition. She takes pride in playing defense."

Bramble Donaldson is billed as the star of the class. This girl is a Johnson type player and can play the 3 spot as good as the 2, which is VERY nice considering her height. The unsung recruit is the post player. She is undersized like Dowdell, but is tough like Dowdell and I have no doubt will fill a void.

I am very excited about these players. I think we have another spot still, so hoping for a big signee for that one.

It is all about what you need and we needed these three. All three fill spots that we have an urgent need. We had a real top post star signed, but she really messed up her life with a big mistake in high school.

How do you shoot for a higher percentage from 3 than you do the field? Sounds like her coach should have told her not to take a single shot unless it was from 3.

I sure would love to return to the days that we dominated in the paint. If we could just get that big girl or girls with this 3-pointer coming in we would be tough.

Are we officially done with recruiting HS girls? I thought for sure, that Spoon walking into a 16 or 17 year olds house could help land us some HS talent. As good as the JUCOS maybe, I just dont see us being able to build a program around JUCOS.

More and more "athleticism" has become the key ingredient for players in WBB. 20-30 yrs ago, all ya needed was some girl(s) 6' or taller and they could dominate the boards/paint with their size alone. Not so anymore. Today, "bigs" have got to be able to move, to handle the ball, and possess real basketball skills.

Griner can move. She has some "quicks" and has good hands and skills. Tennessee's 6'6" big girl, Cain, is more of a throw-back to 20+ years ago, and as a result she got dominated and was a non-factor.

So! at 6' 1" and 6' 2" if these players can JUMP, yes, get off the floor, and if they can MOVE, get up and down the court, then their height is good enough.

Look at Notre Dame, for instance, they have 4 true guards and no really good "big" but they get up and down the floor and as a result they are a good team. That's just one example that comes to mind. Xavier nearly knocked off Stanford, with all their bigs, and did it with athleticism.

I don't like recruiting this many JUCOS, one or two, to fill a short-term need is always okay. Three? But, this is Spoon's team and we have to trust she is doing the best she can in the tough world of recruiting.

I totally agree. Anyone that watched Dowdell totally dominate a bigger Florida State front court could see that it was her moves with the size that did it. I don't want a big slow post that can't get up and down the court.

I don't think we are finished recruiting, so I hope we can get another HS player this year. It will be next year that this Rookie COY that Spoon won will help us most. That should get us in the door to some top players.

It will come, but we have to be patient. Spoon will go after HS players, but we need holes filled quickly for this coming year.
