    Strange Call

First game last night. There always seems to be at least one weird call...

Batter attempting to get out of the way of a pitch hit the ball with his hand (kinda swatted at it). The umpire called dead ball. Didn't give batter the base. Said batter hit ball with his hand. Then counted the pitch as a ball.

Thats the right call. That prevents the batters from leaning in to pitches. I know he made an attempt to get out of the way, but if he swatted at it then the rule still counts.

...and it should have gone as a ball in the count?

The umpire makes the call on whether the pitch was going to be a ball or a strike. You can actually strike out by leaning into a pitch.

Then he felt that the kid would not have gotten hit if he wouldn't have put his hand out. If that's true, then it was correct call. I've seen one ump call a STRIKE when a ball hit a batter, because the ball was on the inside corner when it hit his forearm.
