Probably a matter of when they could get a less-expensive flight. If they can save $200 per ticket by flying in the afternoon instead of early in the morning, I think that's a no-brainer when you're talking about a travel party of 30+ people.
That said, every time we traveled to the west coast when I was with the baseball team, we would leave from San Francisco or Reno or wherever it was fairly early in the morning (Pacific time), but then have to change planes in Denver with a layover before heading to Dallas. So oftentimes it was 4 or 5 p.m. before we even landed at DFW. Then, include Dallas rush-hour traffic and stopping for dinner on the way back, and it was almost always well after 10 p.m. before we actually made it back to Ruston.
Who won?
Have you guys ever priced a roundtrip ticket from Shreveport or Monroe to Dallas? Now multiply that by every coach, player, trainer, key booster,... per road game flight.
It is absolutely ridiculous what is charged for that short leg, but the airlines charge it BECAUSE THEY CAN. The Ruston to Dallas drive is not bad and it saves us a ton of $$$ that can be better spent on other things that are much more needed.
