New Jersey Wing Commits to La Tech - FromTheBlueSeats.com

A new blog entry has posted on FromTheBlueSeats.com.

Another commitment for Kerry Rupp as he rebuilds the roster. A nod to Kevin at Parsing the WAC for catching this one. The following quote comes from blog.northstarbball.com A few days ago, 6’7 small forward Stojan Gjuroski ’10 of Life Center Academy (NJ) committed to Louisiana Tech, according to reports. Originally from Macedonia, Gjuroski is [...]

This headline is misleading. This kid ain't no Guido. He's a furrner!!!

Serious question though: For those of you who follow this more closely than I do, is a top 40 kid from Jersey any better than a top 20-25 kid from Louisiana? I don't know the quality of Jersey prep basketball, but I know there are some kids who can play in Louisiana.

We have commitments from all over, and I know many of those commitments came from connections to the coaching staff. It's not like we've traveled to see these kids play. At least, I don't think we have. However, I am a proponent that taking a regional approach to recruiting is the best use of our limited resources.

Louisiana Select should set up a fictitious phone number of some place in Canada or California for the guy he mentioned in another thread that we should recruit and maybe Rupp would call him and offer him a scholarship. I know that Mike has seen a lot of high school basketball players and I would trust him more in identifying talent than I would Rupp. It just amazes me that we don't use a guy like Mike in helping identify good players.

I'm just shocked that LA Tech fans have to learn who our recruits are from "Kevin at Parsing the WAC".

How stupid is that? Evidently Rupp knows NOTHING about using "recruiting season" as a tool to build interest in a program and improve a fan base.

Where DO we get these coaches?

This is the same type of recruiting that Jerry Loyed did. For those of you that don't know where Macedonia is, its located between Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania and Greece.

His stats game-by-game are pretty steady randing from 3-10ppg..but then there's a game where he blew up for 22pts and made 6 out of 7 threes. Seems like the guy has potential. Let's hope we get him more consistent.

Nicholls State found a player in Australia, Anatoly Bose...
16th in the NCAA in scoring
    1st team All-Louisiana
    1st team All-Southland
    All-Southland tournament team
    NABC 1st team All-District
invited to Australian national team try-outs
and he still has 1 year left of eligibility...

Who cares where they are from if they are good?

I'll say this about Rupp, he's making a big Lady Techsters fan out of me. I've just about lost all interest in men's basketball with the way recruiting is going. The good news is he's only got 2 years left on his contract. The bad news is he's got 2 years left on his contract.

Re: New Jersey Wing Commits to La Tech - FromTheBlueSeats.com

I don't have a problem with recruiting "foreign" players for short term needs. In fact, one of my favorite college players over the last decade was Baylor University point guard Aaron Bruce (2005-08), from Australia.

    http://www.baylorbears.com/sports/m-...e_aaron00.html

But even current Baylor coach Scott Drew admits that recruiting overseas in NOT favorable to any college program long term. Drew was forced to recruit foreign players (including Bruce) in order to be competitive the first couple of years after Baylor suffered major penalties related to the Patrick Dennehy murder and the subsequent Dave Bliss scandal.

But Drew doesn't actively recruit foreigners anymore. Instead, Drew now prefers to recruit the pipelines he steadily built over the last 5 or 6 years into the better Texas (and regional, such as Louisiana) high school programs. This is what Rupp SHOULD be doing, now that he's entering his 4th year.

The blue print is out there. Rupp's just not following it.

We've been dealt a pretty crappy hand with him here. I mean, he's had just about the worst luck I've ever seen.

Re: New Jersey Wing Commits to La Tech - FromTheBlueSeats.com

With the exception of Dawgdude and Dawg06, the rest of the posters above are morons and ignorant.

First of, La Tech is not Baylor. They have an easier time getting local recruits than La Tech. Once again, if La Tech had the facilities- (practice facility, finger print identification entry to practice court and up to date video board), etc, money- (charter flights to every road game, Nike Elite sponsorship) and support -(Number 1 sport, Sold out games, Booster programs that brings in millions of dollars per year) that Baylor had, then Lacederius Dunn, Tweety Carter, Storm Warren, Markel Brown,Terrance Henry, etc would be at La Tech. But you know what, La Tech has none of that stuff. Some of you on this board need to take your medication and realize it's not 1985 anymore. The landscape in basketball has changed. Its an arms race in college basketball, its all about the frills, that's what attracts recruits and even coaches these days.

Second, even Mike Theus was the head coach here, his top players would still not be here. Markel Brown would still go to Oklahoma St, why, the facilities and support are ten times better.

Third, Rupp and his staff trying to get talent to La Tech, don't you think if there are kids as talented nearby, they would be here. Rupp offers the scholarship, but for high major kids like the ones I named to come to La Tech, you better be paying them or getting someone in their family a job or something.

Fifth, For those of you that don't know, New Jersey/New York is the hot bed of basketball, many college basketball teams recruit from out of that area.

Lastly, every mid major program wants to be the next Gonzaga. Well, if any of you remember, when Gonzaga started making its claim in college basketball, its rosters were littered with international players before they started winning conference championships. Look it up. Even now, take a look at Gonzaga's roster, it has four Canadian, 2 Austrailians, in its top 9 rotations. St Mary's took a page out of Gonzaga's blueprint and guess what, in the last five years, they have beaten Gonzaga and finally this year, made it to the NCAA tournament and beat a team or two.

    Some of you people need to take that time machine to 2010 and realize that this is what college basketball is. As I said in another thread;

The game of basketball is an international sport, invented by a non American. Even at the highest level, the NBA, is filled with international players. The last 3 out of the last 5 NBA MVPs were international players.

    .
Everybody KNOWS there's an "arms race" in college sports......Thank you Captain Obvious!!!

Same for your stupid comment about New York and New Jersey being a "hotbed" of basketball talent. Ya think?

As for your comments about Baylor, it's important to note that Baylor started rebuilding its mens bb program while under the dark cloud of MAJOR penalties, including a season (2005) where the only games the Bears could play were "in-conference", against other Big XII teams. No feasting on the OOC guys. The 2005 team only had 7 scholarship players, and recorded only one (1) win. The rest of the Big XII simply had their way with the Bears. But this is still when Scott Drew started rebuilding the program.

Furthermore, the differences between Louisiana Tech's basketball facilities at the TAC and the Baylor basketball Ferrell Center are small. I know, because I regularly attend games there. While the TAC seats 8,500 (or so), the Ferrell Center seats 10,284. And no, Baylor does NOT have a new scoreboard, and no, they have NOT traditionally sold out the Ferrell Center for mens basketball games, at least until this year. Over the past 5 years I've attended a lot of Baylor men's games that only had 5K or 6K in attendance.

This is the environment in which Scott Drew recruited Lacedarrius Dunn, Tweety Carter, Curtis Jerrels, etc... No it wasn't perfect, but he did it.

Yes, last year Baylor completed a new athletic facility --including a new football practice field-- right down the street from the Ferrell Center. But this wasn't available when Drew first turned the program around. That's the point.

People at Tech --including people like dascoop-- need to quit making excuses for failure. Just fix the damn problem and quit your bitchin!

I am going to side with HogDog on this one. I don't mind foreign players as much as I am dissapointed that we aren't building relationships with some of the local coaches so that we can get some future local players. If there are players of the quality of Olu or Magnum we need to grab them no matter where they are from. We still need to have a relationship with local coaches so that when one of those players pops up locally we have a shot at him.
