The underwater oil in the Gulf of Mexico is headed away from the coast, according to federally-funded scientists studying the spill.

BP: Tube siphoning much of spilled crude oil
The oil company wrestled for a third day with its latest device for slowing the nearly month-old leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
Engineers Sunday successfully threaded a mile-long tube into a section of the blown pipe that has been spewing thousands of gallons of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico, marking a major step in corralling the massive spill.
The tube is siphoning oil gushing out of the well and sucking it up 5,000 feet to a tanker ship on the surface, said Kent Wells, senior vice president for exploration and production with BP, which owns the underground oil well. BP engineers should know by today or Tuesday how much of the oil is being captured, he said.
"So far, it's working extremely well," Wells said.

I've rented the same beachhouse in Fort Morgan, Ala for the past 7 years. I was still bound and determined to go down there this year despite all the "doom and gloom". I rationalized that those folks down there need the money and whatever the BP spill has done it can't take away the sound of the ocean or the stars at night. I was wrong...the house I rent has had so many cancellations that I was the only week in July that was spoken for. The owners called me yesterday and said that it just doesn't make sense to keep the place up for the summer with only two weeks reserved. They said they were sorry and I know they really meant it but ...wow. Just wow. This thing just gets more unbelievably worse for the poor folks on the Gulf Coast.
One of my customers just got back from their beachhouse in Orange Beach. This man has owned his property for over 25 years. He had tears in his eyes as he described the oil/tar on the beach and how downtrodden all the local businesses were. Most of the working/retail folks are done. Anybody that's been to Gulf Shores is familiar with the large grocery store on the corner as you come into Gulf Shores , BRUNO'S. My customer told me he drove by that corner at around several times during his recent stay and there were only a few cars in that whole huge lot.

In oiled La. marshes, signs of regrowth seen
Shoots of marsh grass and mangrove bushes are starting to grow back in a bay where just months ago photographers shot startling images of dying pelicans coated in oil from the Gulf spill.
More than a dozen scientists interviewed by The Associated Press say the marsh here and across the Louisiana coast is healing itself, giving them hope delicate wetlands might weather the worst offshore spill in U.S. history better than they had feared. Some marshland could be lost, but the amount appears to be small compared with what the coast loses every year through human development.
On Tuesday, a cruise through the Barataria Bay marsh with scientists revealed thin shoots growing up out of the oiled mass of grass. Elsewhere, there were still gray, dead mangrove shrubs, likely killed by the oil, but even there new green growth was coming up.
"These are areas that were black with oil," said Matt Boasso, a temporary worker with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
