My guess is Montana State has to come with Montana. Montana is a constant contender for the FCS national title so they might actually have the talent level to compete in the WAC and possibly make it better. Unfortunately short term perceptionwise, both would look worse than inviting USU, NMSU, and Idaho.
He is a true idiot! You HAVE to take pro-active steps now. You don't dip down, you reach up and grab the best you can. This was VERY discouraging.........
The only proactive move I think could add value to the WAC would be to add GONZAGA... It would keep the WAC at 9 football schools (4 home, 4 away) and make 10 basketball schools for optimal scheduling partners (Gonzaga-Idaho, Boise-USU, Nevada-Fresno, SJSU-Hawaii, LA Tech-NMSU)... and add MBB units... and the WAC could drop Sac. St. as a baseball school...
Gonzaga University Profile
- Small with an undergraduate enrollment of 4,729 and total enrollment of 7,682...
- Private Catholic liberal arts school...
- Good academics (Tier 1 #3 master's university in the west, average 26.6 ACT and 3.66 GPA)...
- Top 100 Law School (Current governor of Washington is an alumnus)...
- Endowment of $152 million...
- Located in Spokane, Washington (same size of Shreveport: city 200,000 - metro 600,000)...
- Most famous basketball alumnus: John Stockton...
- Mascot: Bulldogs...
- Colors: Red, white, and blue...
- Member of West Coast Conference (all members are private Catholic schools except for Pepperdine which is Church of Christ)...
- Offers 16 sports... men's and women's: basketball, soccer, track & field, cross country, golf, tennis, and rowing... men's baseball... women's volleyball... but no football...
- 12 consecutive NCAA men's basketball tournament appearances with 5 sweet sixteens and 1 elite eight...
- Washington State University is located an hour away...
But would they want to leave the WCC??

You mean both the WAC and MWC ignored the called ban on doing business in AZ? Shame on you....!!!!
I don't think Montana would be a terrible addition, but Montana State wouldn't add anything that I can think of. Cal poly is a Tier 1 university and ranked number 6 by UsNews, so I'm not sure they'd consider the WAC a great fit.
This is all besides the point though. Benson should be looking to make the conference better. He's playing not to lose.
I have seen it on the internet (so it has to be true!) that the Montana legislature will not let Montana go anywhere without MSU. Kind of like the supposed Texas/A&M link (have not seen real documentation on that one either, so it would be interesting if someone could post a link to them). I personally think Montana is a great candidate for moving up, but I read a few months ago that their administration and fan base were not keen on it due to the increased headaches that come with BCS participation.
They're a terrible candidate when factoring location and weather. It is very hard to get in and out of Montana (team travel-wise), the winter weather is atrocious (affecting all fall, winter and early spring sports), and Montana is remote enough and has so few people that it is difficult to generate any interest in Montana sports outside the state's borders. Good sports program? You bet. Good choice for conference affiliation? Probably never.
