    USC receives a SMACKDOWN!!!

    While the bowl ban is the most damaging to new coach Lane Kiffin, USC also will lose 30 scholarships over a three-year period, 10 annually from 2011-13. The Trojans received four years of probation.
    Essentially, USC receives the toughest sanctions since SMU received the death penalty. The Trojans get a two-year bowl ban and lose 30 scholarships. WOW! That's gonna hurt!

    Tell me again why TEXAS would want to move to the PAC 10 (or PAC 16)? USC is going to be down for a long time. It make take USC 5 to 8 years to recover. Seems to me the PAC 10 needs Texas a lot worse than Texas needs the PAC 10.

    Colorado and USC have more in common than I realized.

    NCAA sanctions!

    Well, if Texas does move, they will be ruling that conference for years to come. Gives them a good start on establishing themselves as the boss again.

    Does that mean their total # of scholarships drop to 55? That's 8 less than FCS allows. that'll take a while to recover from. Conference expansion is now the least of their worries. The Big 12 teams would be crazy to join up with the PAC 10 now. I really think the Big 12 staying together could help Tech. The Big 12 most likely brings in BYU and AFA to replace Nebraska and Colorado. TCU could insist the MWC take Houston or UTEP to cut down on their travel, or both to replace Utah, BYU, and AFA opening up 2 spots in CUSA-West. TCU is now the big dog in the conference and can call the shots.

    10 per year for 3 years. So they will be at 75.

    I agree. The loss of 30 scholarships over three (3) years will cripple the USC program until the year 2017. It will be 7 years before the Trojans are back to their full load of scholarships.

    Barring a successful protest, here's what the scholarship "drain" at USC will look like annually:

    Season
    2011 = Down 10 scholarships
    2012 = Down 20 scholarships
    2013 = Down 30
    2014 = Down 30 (still down 30, as this is senior year for 2011 class)
    2015 = Down 20
    2016 = Down 10
    2017 = Down 0 - Back to full count of scholarships!

    So, it will be 2017 before USC is back to full scholarship levels.

    USC is going to appeal, which will only cause the problem to fester longer.

    No, it is 10 per year. They will always be at 75. Remember that a scholarship is only a one year commitment...

    --- Reduction of football athletics scholarships to 15 initial grants and 75 total grants for each of the 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. This represents a decrease of 10 scholarships for each of the three seasons.

    Either way, this is really going to hurt them.

    Especially the two year bowl ban.

    USC's 2010 Spring Roster has 20 Seniors, 33 Juniors, 21 Sophomores, and 17 Freshmen. 65 players have Red Shirted while 26 players have not.

    If the sanctions hold, the 2012 season looks bad for USC. They will have the 38 Freshmen and Sophomores left from the current roster plus the players they can recruit in the next 2 years. Limited scholarships and no postseason bowls for 2 years doesn't sound too pleasing to college football recruits, especially those who are talented enough to be recruited by a USC caliber team.

    I wonder how Tennessee looks now.

    Yes, it's 10 per year, but my understanding is that the scholarships are stacked. So, instead of signing 25 kids in 2011, they can only sign 15. Same for 2012, and 2013. So over a 3-year period, they can only offer 45 schollys, instead of 75. They are still going to be DOWN 10 scholarships in year 1, and down another 10 in year 2, for a running total of 20 scholarships in year two, etc.....because they can't make up the lost scholly on the backside.

    There are 3 players in your numbers that will be true freshment this year, and they signed a total of 19 players this past year, so they really have 54 sophomores and freshmen and they can recruit 15 the next year, and 15 the year after, they won't be short any more than the 75 total scholarships they are allowed each year.

    That's not much punishment just dropping to 75 scholarships.
