In Tennessee between Nashville and Chattanooga. They are called "The University of the South"

I was just up in Chattanooga last weekend. The University of the South does sound familiar. They have a decent endowment for their student size. I am sure they are a very good liberal arts school and would be a better destination than Tech if that was a students proposed course of study. I am an engineer however and will stick with Tech. Opinions will obviously vary.
I stand by the rest of my statement though.
I think that in order for some people from academically challenged institutions to understand the tier system, they need to revamp it to show the difference between a National and a Masters University. Just rank the National Universities Tier 1 thru 3 like now, then start with 4 for the Masters level Universities. They are going to have to dumb it down for some people to understand it.
Apparently Boise's academics did not deter their entry into the MWC.
This Sewanee thing is a stupid argument. There are a ton of small --but academically strong-- liberal arts schools in this country, particularly up and down the east coast. But that doesn't put them on par with a LA Tech. (By the way, one of my nephews attended Sewanee, and thought it was badly overrated!)
The best way to determine LA Tech's academic strength is to look at the company it keeps; some other notable Tier 3 national universities located in the southern U.S. are Ole Miss, Miss State, and Oklahoma State. For comparision sake, I much prefer being associated with those schools rather than Troy or MTSU.

The MWC has to be more concerned with improving their football strength for AQ BCS purposes. They can swallow the academics to improve their chances of becoming an AQ. Any non- AQ has to be concerned with football strength more than academics. That doesn't mean it doesn't come into play. C-USA west schools are probably going to be the most concerned with academics of any of the non AQs.
Boises academics didn't prevent them from getting into the Mountain west. It didn't help them either.
