The Conference USA (my conference) comes out of this with a chance of improving by perhaps adding Baylor, but we're vulnerable in the east. I also think it's possible that even if the conference is untouched that The Age of the Super Conference may compel us to expand regardless. Probably not immediately, though. We will need to figure out whether the increased bargaining power of more games and an even less relevant Sun Belt to under-bid us of more games adds anything.
I'd imagine that Karl Bensen is on the phone with Missoula trying to beg them to make the leap. That would be an actual quality team and would up their count by two since Montana State would come along. UC-Davis would probably also be under consideration as I've heard that they have ambitions. California politics is not very generous to college football, though, unless you're one of a few schools.
The WAC knows we want out and they want us out. When the dust settles we will be somewhere else. I hope it's where we want to be.
We do not want to be in the same conference with ULM because it hurts both programs. It makes a great rivalry, the games would be hard fought, and the stands would be full. However, the schools share the same recuiting area so being in the same conference means splitting the best talent. The result is neither team is able to step up and take on the big boys.
Think about it, being in the WAC has given us games against prominent teams (Boise, Fresno, Nevada, Hawaii) that gives the better players a reason to choose Tech over ULM. Seriously, what has the Sun Belt teams done to make a splash? If ULM joins the WAC, we will lose players needed to increase our depth, which is critical if we expect to be consistently competitive against the big programs.
