I grew up in Baltimore. We knew we were south of the Mason-Dixon line, but did not consider ourselves Southerners. Of course, it is all relative, New Yorkers thought we were southern.

We can argue semantics all day long, but the Mason Dixon was drawn up in the 1760s when we were still British colonies. There was no "deep south" back then. MD might have been considered to be in the "south" at that time (250 years ago), but we're talking about today. It ain't the south, and neither is WV. Kind of like why we call MN and WI the "Midwest" -- it's the accepted vernacular, but at the same time it's obsolete.

Yeah, I actually heard a guy on the radio a while back calling NJ a "southern" state. He must have been from Boston...
