There's an interesting note at the end of the story saying Sonny Dykes will make his coaching debut in the same stadium (Indy Bowl) that his father (Spike Dykes) made his coaching debut in. But there's no further info about who the elder Dykes was coaching for or against when he made his debut, nor when it happened. Poor reporting.

As a certified journalist, HD, I can report that Spikes' first head coaching game was with Texas Tech at the 1986 Independence Bowl, where Tech lost to Ole Miss 20-17.

For the for interested readers, Spike took David McWilliams place. McWilliams left Texas Tech to become the head coach at the University of Texas.

Spike Dykes was a wonderful coach and perfect for Texas Tech. My favorite quote of his is

“They whipped us like a tied-up goat.”
