    iPhone/Android App

We need one. Other schools (TCU, even ULL) have apps on the smartphone networks that allow students to check grades, look at inventory in the library, look up sports schedules, and just look at campus news. They also have interactive maps for on campus and alerts for campus events. This would be a good way to get students more involved on campus and keep on the cutting edge of technology. Is anyone savvy enough to make one or know how to go about doing this?

I've been waiting on this for awhile. You know, for a technical/engineering school, we sure do lag behind in technical things!

I am sure there is someone on campus that could do it. We have a class dedicated to it at my school.

For quick access to Southern University news, sports scores or even financial aid information on the iPhone, there is now the “Jag App” available for free download. Schools in the Southern System, including those in Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Shreveport, are the first public colleges in the state to unveil an iPhone app. Tulane University released a similar app in March and LSU plans to go online with its own by early September. The $40,000 LSU app programs completed by the Blackboard software company will feature LSU news, videos, directories, maps and even GPS tracking for campus bus services. Southern and Tulane have similar iPhone apps created by Tulsa, Okla.-based Straxis, which has done apps for more than a dozen colleges.

hold your lunch down when I tell you this....ULM is ditching their blackboard service and going to be completley wireless....with wifi connections on campus....all with a neat warhawk application that will be a free download. I am not sure who they have lined up to replace blackboard yet....can find out next week.

My guess would be Moodle... It's free... AND IT SUCKS!!! Tech looked into switching a couple years ago but decided Moodle was just awful and wasn't worth the saved money...

It's been a while since I did anything on blackboard, but I use moodle almost daily and I haven't had any issues with it.

I recently had to switch from Tech's upgraded Blackboard Professional Edition to Moodle. Big difference. It's not that Moodle doesn't work. It's very functional. Moodle is just very rudimentary compared to Blackboard Professional.

I think it's a good way to cut costs. Very few professors use blackboard like they are supposed to anyway. I'd wager that about 50% of professors put grades and assignments on BB in a timely manner.

LSU switched to Moodle too recently, and ULL has BEEN using it. Everyone seems to be headed toward it nowadays.
