Most all schools do this. Want the logos to look fresh for first game
Springer and his equipment staff detail every helmet every week during the season if it needs it. A TV game gives them extra motivation to make sure the equipment looks its shiny best.

The reason is simple actually. If the decals were added at the begining of Summer practace, they would have to be removed before the first game anyway. There are a few schools/pro-teams that have the helmets decaled during camp, but they are only showing off the new logo.
