Not only does a BYU-less MWC make no sense for Houson...it makes no sense for TCU.
It is not a league that is going to gain AQ status. Its effectively the current WAC.
Something is going to give.

But TCU has nowhere to go. They are kind of like us with the Sun Belt.... they are too good for CUSA. They will only leave for the B12.
I agree and it makes plenty of sense for UTEP, and despite sabotage attempts by Benson and current WAC members I strongly believe in the UTEP -La.Tech swap. It probably won't happen overnight but it will happen.
In addition, the Mountain West has a chance to drive the death nail into the conference that it competes with head to head for recruits. If it makes the remaining WAC teams independents, it'll have choice pickings of all western recruits that are rejected or not recruited by the PAC 12.
MWC isn't byu-less yet. Neither the depleted WAC nor the WCC will allow the schedule assistance in football that BYU needs. I think they are stuck in the MWC.

But if BYU stays then they have an excellent chance of becoming an AQ (anybody figured out yet how Fresno and Nevada helps them with their rating?). Although Lilfido disagrees with me on this, I think BYU has a better than 50% chance of staying now with Fresno, Nevada, and possibly adding UH. That is a pretty solid lineup for AQ consideration. And if they become AQ, the money issues kind of go away for BYU.
Nevada helps with basketball and sometimes football. Fresno football and sometimes
basketball. Plus the conference is looking long term to make sure they survive.
Not like Benson and reacting.
It would go away but it will never happen because the big boys just wont see the additions of Fresno and Nevada as enough. Those two programs haven't sniffed a BCS bid. They also haven't even won their own perceived weak WAC conference in at least 10 years. In order for BYU to stay, the payout setup would have to look like the set up of the Big 12 where BYU gets a larger share of revenues than the other schools. The other MW schools would laugh at that. BYU's primary concern is watching a fellow state school (UTAH) who was comparable to them just a month and a half ago, go big time. They feel like they have to do something to somewhat counter the UTAH momentum or else they'll be relegated to the minor leagues forever. FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, BYU IS NOW INDY.
I think that BYU has pissed way too many people off to go back to the Mountain West, they gotta go Indy.
BYU's main goal is not money etc. They want to get their religious message out through sports and they feel that by going Indy with football they have a better chance to do that. They have their own TV network so their goals are totally different than the rest of the NCAA world. Not to say that they may not change their minds and stay, but not for the reasons being speculated upon. All they need is a hookup for their non football sports.
Not to disagree with your main point, but here's the thing about their TV station: I don't think they can use it to showcase sports. BYUtv is carried primarily as an education, religious, public good channel. Cable and satellite carriers won't keep carrying it if it becomes a sports channel. There are more profitable alternatives available.
