Thumbs Up Steak Challenge and 1K-5K-10K run set for Oct. 23

Trying to put the word out. Need more entries in both events. - dpix

Kingsland Ranch Steak Challenge set for Oct. 23 at The Ike
Can you sizzle with the best when grilling a premium rib-eye steak?

All area steak grill masters are invited to compete in the Monroe Jaycees’ premiere Kingsland Ranch Steak Challenge, a charity fund-raising cooking contest set for Oct. 23 at the IkeHamiltonExpositionCenter in West Monroe.

To start the day off and create an immense appetite for the cook off, the Jaycees will also host the
1-5-10K Triple Play Run that morning at The IKE.

Melinda Robinson, a vice president with the Monroe Jaycees, said they are sponsoring the two events to support local youth programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Louisiana and the Jaycees' many local projects including their annual Christmas Shopping Tour.

“The purpose of the Jaycees is to aid the community and to increase abilities in today’s youth which coincides with the Boys & Girls Clubs, which we are happy to support,” Robinson said.

Entry fee for the steak challenge will be $100 per team. Participants attending can purchase a $15 Sampler ticket. Only 180 of the sampling tickets will be sold by the Jaycees, Robinson said. The ticket includes a plate with an ear of roasted corn, baked potato and utensils. “Those who purchase a sampling ticket will also be allowed to vote on their favorite team in the Jaycees’ People’s Choice competition," Robinson said.

    Dr. Terry King, owner of
West Monroe’s Kingsland Ranch, had the idea to raise monies for a local non-profit organization and to create a day of fun-filled, family event. King raises Herford-Brangus mix of cattle, which are naturally raised on his western Ouachita ranch. The method used to raise these cattle helps to create a unique natural flavor in the beef. In fact other cattlemen in the region have visited the ranch and adopted some of King’s practices at their own ranches through the state and region.

“We picked the Oct. 23 date as there are no college football games in the area that weekend,” said Glen Lewellyan, general manager of Copeland’s Restaurant, which is also owned Dr. King. Lewellyan is one of the coordinators of the fund-raiser. "We have the Louisiana Cattlemens Association taking part both as a major sponsor and they will provide one of the judges,” Lewellyan said.

Cooking teams are expected to fill fast, Lewellyan said, as only 270 12 oz. cuts of the naturally raised premium rib-eye steaks will be available. “We are limiting the competition this year to 25 cooking teams,” Lewellyan said. "Each team will receive 10 steaks, one for judging and the other nine for the samplers who buy tickets. The winning team named by the judging panel will be awarded the Kingsland Ranch Challenge Championship Trophy.

For the competition the grillers provide their own grill, seasonings, and accessories. Dr. King
and Kingsland Ranchprovide the steaks. Local grill masters may also prepare other items to serve Challenge attendees in an effort to secure their People's Choice vote.

The 25 head grill masters will meet to go over rules at
11:30 a.m., before they fire up their grills at noon. Serving of the steaks will begin at 4 p.m. and entries for the grand prize will be submitted by the cooks for judging at 5 p.m. with winners announced around 6.

Sponsorships for the event are available at $5,000 Prime; $2,500 Choice; $1,000 Select; $500, Standard; and $100, Lean. All Prime, Choice, Select and Standard sponsorships will receive one cooking team entry in the challenge.

The 5K & 10K Triple Play run and 1K Fun Run/Walk will begin at
7 a.m. with registration at the front of The Ike. The Run will start at 8 a.m. with awards being handed out after 11 a.m. Entry fee for the runs will be $20 with proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Louisiana.

Proceeds from the run and fun run/walk will go to support B&GCNELA's Triple Play program, a Boys & Girls Club program that helps improve Club members' knowledge of healthy habits, good nutrition and physical fitness: increase the numbers of hours per day they participate in physical activities; and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others and to engage in healthy relationships. The 5K/10K run in Monroe sounds like fun, but I'm already registered for the Autumn Breeze 10K in Shreveport in the 23rd.
