    Jindal challenges universities
Gov. urges schools to operate more efficiently
    By Greg Hilburn

RAYVILLE — A showdown between Gov. Bobby Jindal and higher education is brewing as looming budget cuts have stirred university administrators and faculty to protests and has Jindal going on the offensive to demand more results from them for the state's buck. MORE

"It's very important for the school and the community," Jindal said. "The new president needs to be somebody with a specific vision who is focused on unique areas of excellence like (the College of Pharmacy)."

Did the News Star add the "college of pharmacy" to Jindal's quote?

When the "pay for performance" plan was instituted, Louisiana Tech got $700,000 added back to the budget. This was $1.5 million LESS than what should have come to our university?

Where did OUR money go? Look east and west.

Students can expect a 10% tuition increase for the next 10 years. This is the max allowed.

Maybe one of our expert grammar/journalism folks can explain why this was done.

I thought parentheses were normally used inside a quote to point out something grammatically incorrect about the quote/statement.

I think it may be to clarify. Jindal could have said Pharmacy but they thought the college of Pharmacy was more clear. In that case it probably would have been (the college of) Pharmacy.

Maybe he said pharmacology or something incorrect and they corrected it.

without looking it up -- and our resident journalists can probably do better than me -- i think parentheses are used to insert editorial comments, usually to clarify the meaning of the quote (often something that was clarified by the speaker in another sentence not directly quoted). [brackets] are used to insert clarification text in place of actual words in the quote, such as replacing a pronoun with the specific noun for clarity.
