The first amendment to the US Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" The two parts, known as the "establishment clause" and the "free exercise clause" respectively, form the textual basis for the Supreme Court's interpretations of the "separation of church and state" doctrine.
I know you are all watching "The View". I'll get a report from Dogtor later. He dreams of Whoopi, Joy, and Rachel Madcow.
The View.. ugh. A bunch of hens cackling as if they know what they're talking about.
Yeah, they didn't go that deep. She was just asking him to verify if "Separation of Church and State" is in the Constitution. And he backed away from that, because it isn't.
The phrase "wall of separation between the church and the state" was originally coined by Thomas Jefferson in a letter to the Danbury Baptists on January 1, 1802. His purpose in this letter was to assuage the fears of the Danbury, Connecticut Baptists, and so he told them that this wall had been erected to protect them.
We've always had 2 parties that have had different ideas / philosophies. Granted, we didn't have the radical ideas back then like we do today, but Jefferson had his enemies on the other side. I think Alexander Hamilton was his biggest adversary. They debated big federal government vs states rights.
I don't think O'Donnell is was a good candidate, but I would have voted for her over a Marxist.

None of the three people I referenced are legitimate conservatives. For instance, I believe in personal responsibility. Which means I take exception to a person quitting an elected job so she can make a lot more money running around the country being a celebrity. I also tend to believe in fiscal responsibility, which means I have trouble with "let's just cut taxes and it'll all be fine" type rhetoric.
It is precisely because I'm a Reagan Republican that I loathe the empty-headed celebrities that are running for office under a "conservative" banner.
