    $290K/year for Lincoln Center stagehand

The power of unions: Average stagehand at Lincoln Center in NYC makes $290K a year

Read more at the Washington Examiner:

By: Mark Hemingway 12/27/10 11:16 AM

Columnist James Ahearn of New Jersey's Bergen Record has a great column today on, of all things, the stagehands at New York city's top performing arts venues such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. These are not highly skilled or technical jobs but take a gander at how much they are paid:
At Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, the average stagehand salary and benefits package is $290,000 a year.

To repeat, that is the average compensation of all the workers who move musicians' chairs into place and hang lights, not the pay of the top five.

Across the plaza at the Metropolitan Opera, a spokesman said stagehands rarely broke into the top-five category. But a couple of years ago, one did. The props master, James Blumenfeld, got $334,000 at that time, including some vacation back pay.

Ahern also notes that the top paid stagehand at Carnegie Hall makes $422,599 a year in salary, plus $107,445 in benefits and deferred compensation. So why such exorbitant pay? You probably already guessed that a union is involved:

Those jobs are a lot more complicated and difficult than simply "moving chairs" and "hanging lights".

Not worth that amount of money!

I have a friend who's son is the lighting designer/manager (very complicated) for a show in Vegas and believe me, he makes no where near that kind of money. I realize it's more than moving chairs and hanging lights, but get real. That's some serious dough.

For Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, two of the top venues in the world, it's not unreasonable.

I want JuBru to be my boss when it comes to salaries. Unfortunately if you think that is reasonable you will never be the owner- you would never be able to stay in business.

Are NYC performing arts centers having trouble staying in business? Would you prefer the money be stripped from their salaries and given to the owners instead?

If these salaries are unreasonable, they should fire all of the stagehands and refuse to do business with union employees. With unemployment where it is, they shouldn't have a hard time finding replacements.

    Agreed!

Or with liberals so concerned about the performing arts and the poor; fire all of these over priced "stagehands" and cut ticket prices or make them for free so the "down and outs" can enjoy some culture. Wait, alternate the seating so that the wealthy libs and the poor alternate seats next to each other and it would be perfect. Think that will ever happen? Yea right!

Just like will the screaming liberal elitist write that extra check and pay more taxes just because they feel guilty and think they should. Yea right!

the top paid stagehand at Carnegie Hall makes $422,599 a year in salary

...and he probably pays $20,000 a month in union dues. Then the union slips the community organizer 10k of that under the table every month....of that, the community organizer puts $1 in a Salvation Army kettle every Christmas and everybody's happy.

What I would prefer is that they not have any funding from any taxpayer dollars. If they do then the money should be taken out of the salaries and govt. funding stopped. I would never want to give a penny of govt. money to any of the performing arts centers and we have amazing amounts of money going to support so-called "art." I don't know if we give to them or not- I certainly hope not.

If we were talking about some run-of-the-mull performance areas, like the Dixie in Ruston, I would agree with y'all. But Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Sudney Opera House, et al are completely different.

Don't pianos weigh the same in NYC as Ruston, La.?

If you're gonna tell me these high hat guys are engineers who supervise the stagehands, etc., then I'll give the guy the pass, er, paycheck.
