Who Do You Consider to be the Most Versatile Actors/Actresses of Today?

I think these guys and gals are the most versatile of our day. If any of them are in a movie, I'll definitely watch it.
    • Edward Norton
    • Steve Buscemi
    • Charlize Theron
    • John Malkovich
    • Paul Giamatti
    • Cate Blanchett
Who are the most non-versatile actors/actresses with the most hype? Well, these are my picks.
    • Nicolas Cage (This guy can only play one role and never deviate from it)
    • Keanu Reeves
    • Mark Wahlberg
So, who is on your list?

Based just on stuff I've seen lately:

    Robert Downey Jr.
    Denzel Washington
Bradely Whitford (Just discovered "the Good Guys" on Hulu--really fun show)

    Digging deeper:

    Charlize Theron
Hugh Laurie (have to go back and watch the Black Adders and Jeeve & Wooster to begin to appreciate what he is doing on House)
Hugh Jackman (trying to remember Hugh Laurie's name triggered this one; when I lived overseas I watched a lot of his Australian stuff and was really impressed with how he did in American fare)
Johnny Depp (recently watched the 21 Jump St pilot and Willy Wonka)
    Daniel Day Lewis
    Emma Thompson
    Heath Ledger (truly missed)
    Halle Berry
    Robert Duvall
    Liam Neeson

Re: Who Do You Consider to be the Most Versatile Actors/Actresses of Today?

Sorry Sir, but Cameron Diaz can't act to save her life. She's the female equalivent of Keanu Reeves. And not even a paperbag would help...

    Good:
Definitely, Paul Giamanti. He is always great, no matter how bad the movie is (Planet of the Apes).

Another good one would be Michael Sheen. Always a superb actor.

Have made clear previously I'm a big Robert Downey, Jr fan. Just can't beat him when he's sober...

David Tennant has all the makings of being on of the greats. But I admire that for the most part, he's playing "small" roles that he enjoys and that it appears to be more about the art than the money. Smart of him professionally though since he is so closely associated with Doctor Who.

If she continues acting beyond "bit" roles, I believe Emma Watson could be a first class actress to be compared to the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, and the many other fine British actresses that have graced the silver screen.

Helena Bonham Carter. She is into every role she plays, and genuinely impressed me in The King's Speech.

    Bad:
Cameron Diaz - refer to beginning of post.
Seth Rogen - I get he's a comedic actor, but he's really not that funny to me. He's a comedic Nicolas Cage, but without the Coppola family name to get him jobs. He's always the same actor in every film.
Sam Worthington - He can't act. Another "actor" that is just the same thing over and over.

But she looks pretty damn versatile.

Also wanted to add, Leonardo DiCaprio.

No Will Smith? I know he's in a cult and all, but he seems pretty versatile.

Tom Hanks is a great great actor, but versatile? Just because he played Forrest Gump?

Probably won't make any list because he ain't PC, but Mel Gibson puts the V in versatile.

Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, Robert Redford, Paul Newman

Cast Away was a great performance by Hanks. Only he could interact with nothing but a volleyball for half a movie and make it better than most full-length movies today.

Tom Hanks' visits to Conan O'Brien's shows over the years are funny as well. He was the one that started the Coco chant.

The Terminal is another great Tom Hanks movie and shows his versatility. It should be in the great, overlooked movie thread.

Re: Who Do You Consider to be the Most Versatile Actors/Actresses of Today?

I saw something a couple of weeks ago that was interesting.

Robert Duvall has been in 6 of the Top 100 movies of all time as rated by the American Film Institute, the most by any actor. ('98 Edition)

    3. Godfather
    28. Apocalypse Now
    32. Godfather II
    34. To Kill A Mockingbird
    56. MASH
    66. Network

He also won an Academy Award for Tender Mercies.

With all of that I would say he has to be at the top of the class for versatility, even without considering his portrayals of "The Apostle E.F.", Uncle Hub, Robert E. Lee, The Great Santini or Augustus McCrae.

Duvall is the man for me. I can be entertained for weeks just by watching his movies. By the way, his favorite character (and mine).... GUS.
