True Grit was as versatile as it got for him and he was pretty damn versatile in it. Love Jeff Bridges but he ain't a patch on the Duke as Rooster.
John Wayne is a verb among many other things, a true legend. Miss him greatly!

I was going to mention The Shootist. IMO next to True Grit and The Quiet Man, it is one of JW's finest movies.
I'm also very fond of The Cowboys and I love McClintock. Big Jake makes me smile.

Big - Kid in a man's body.
Philadelphia - Gay lawyer with Aids.
Forrest Gump - Forrest Gump.
Apollo 13 - Astronaut.
Saving Private Ryan - WWII Officer.
You've Got Mail - Romantic comedy.
Cast Away - Solo performance for almost the entire movie.
Cast Away was a great performance by Hanks. Only he could interact with nothing but a volleyball for half a movie and make it better than most full-length movies today.
Tom Hanks' visits to Conan O'Brien's shows over the years are funny as well. He was the one that started the Coco chant.
I've never seen Fear, but I'll take your word for it.
Definitely true. I'm sure he could have been more versatile if he wanted to, but if you're John Wayne, there's nowhere to go but down.
He's also useful for guys in everyday situations ("What would John Wayne do?" "Would John Wayne wear this?", etc.)
