Tom Hanks - He has played it all and done it all well
Geoffrey Rush - Again someone who has played it all but more drama than comedy although Shine and The Life and Death of Peter Sellers were both masterpieces. His new one, The King's Speech is a must see.
Jeff Bridges - The Dude all the way to that broken down CW singer
Clive Owen - Not as versatile as the ones above but a great actor in his own rite

Women:
Cate Blanchett - Hands down the most versatile actress of our time
Judy Dench
And January Jones just because she is just SO beautiful in SO many ways Pics of Her

Philadelphia - Gay lawyer with Aids.

The Terminal is another great Tom Hanks movie and shows his versatility. It should be in the great, overlooked movie thread.

Probably won't make any list because he ain't PC, but Mel Gibson puts the V in versatile.

I had trouble when I first saw Tom Hanks on someone's list, but upon reflection, I agree he is versatile. It's very subtle, though. And I was tracking with you until Robert Redford. Very good actor, but kind of the same in everything. Like Cary Grant.

He's one I'd call "great" but I'm not sold on the "versatile" aspect.

Another versatile actor not mentioned...William H. Macy.

What about Reese Witherspoon? She had great roles early in her career with darker movies like Election, Pleasantville, & Cruel Intentions. Since then, she's been in Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama, and Walk the Line.

Not so versatile actors/actresses (in no particular order)...Dane Cook, Jessica Simpson. I'm surprised no one mentioned Jennifer Lopez yet (so much hype and fame years ago, so many bad movies). I wouldn't call this next person an actor, but Larry the Cable Guy (other than Cars).

Good call on William H. Macy, but you're smoking crack with regard to Reese Witherspoon. (I still have a crush on her, though. )

It's pretty good. It's about a guy that turns from a nice "take home to mom" boyfriend into an obsessive and abusive stalker. It's the movie that actually catapulted Reese's career.
