About 1:30 this afternoon, Yvonne Johnson will be sitting in her Franklin home with an ear glued to the radio, listening to Louisiana Tech media relations director Malcolm Butler set up the impending clash between her beloved Lady Techsters and Southern University.
A tear will likely roll down Johnson's cheek because she was unable to make the four-plus hour drive to Ruston with husband Albert to see their talented daughter, Adrienne, play in one of the last 11 home games of her four-year career. She won't get the pleasure of watching the once shy and bashful Adrienne, who has blossomed into an impressive young woman, eat a few bites of her homemade gumbo while laughing and cutting up with her buddies.
That's because Yvonne Johnson recently left the hospital after yet another round of chemotherapy. She has been struggling to defeat a serious bout of skin cancer for most of the past three years with the resulting treatments leaving her drained. She had hoped to be in the Thomas Assembly Center to see her superstar daughter, currently first in the WAC and 12th in the country in scoring at 22 points per game, continue to carry the team on her reluctant shoulders. Earlier this week, Yvonne wasn't feeling up to the trek and feared her weakened immune system might make her susceptible to an airborne illness.
Although the decision temporarily upset Adrienne, Yvonne nows she must take it slow in order to have adequate strength for the most important upcoming date on the Johnson family calendar. It isn't the Techsters' regular season meeting with Fresno State and it isn't the WAC Tournament. Although the NCAAs and a possible berth in the CenturyTel Center are important, they aren't tops on the Johnson list. That comes on May 21 when Tech's spring commencement ceremonies take place.
Yvonne says she has asked the Lord for one more reprieve, concerning Adrienne, the youngest of her three daughters.
"I want to see my baby walk across the stage and get her diploma this spring. I pray every night and ask the Lord for that," Johnson said. "That, to me, would signify a job well done, and I think I might pass out to see it."
Adrienne is expected to receive her degree in computer information systems after completing her final 11 hours in the winter quarter. She'll be the first in her family of five to earn a college degree.
"It's all downhill for me now," Adrienne said. "It's 11 hours and counting. I just need to pass my classes and it will happen for me."
Strong in her faith, Yvonne Johnson says a prayer of thankfulness for every day she is given, because it provides a little more time to spend with her baby girl.
"I've put it all the Lord's hands 'cause he has the last word. That's my doctor right there, Dr. Jesus. I'm not going down without a fight, I do have faith and trust that the Lord will bring me a match."
While the Techsters will be game planning to win at Tulane (on Dec. 17) and at LSU (on Dec. 19), they'll take the free Saturday in between to participate in a bone marrow drive to assist the treatment coming for Yvonne Johnson. An testing organization is coming down from Jackson to gather swab samples from anyone willing to see if they might be a marrow match. Other Franklinites are cooking barbecue to raise money to offset the workers' free efforts.
"Finding a bone marrow donor will give me the best chance for success," Yvonne said. "I pray we find someone who matches me."
Yvonne Johnson, 51, has been to numerous hospitals for treatment but is regularly taken to M.D. Anderson in Houston by Adrienne's older sisters Cherazar and Quovodas DeLaune. She was supposed to visit doctors in Chicago, but that assessment recently changed.
Now it's a waiting game to see if the treatments have accomplished their goal. The frustrating thing is staying behind at game time. So there won't be a special, Yvonne-cooked pregame meal for the WAC's leading scorer today.
"She'll usually ask me what I want. She'll cook gumbo or rice, gravy and corn, or get this lady to make a sweet potato pie," Adrienne said. "Me and my mom have a great relationship. Sometimes she tries to coach me, but I tell her that's coach Spoon's job. She's a very down-to-earth person and everyone loves her."
Meanwhile, Techsters coach Teresa Weatherspoon remains mindful of the close relationship Adrienne has with her mother. And she's thankful that the relationship has created a player with exceptional work habits, as well as talent.
"AJ is definitely a next level (WNBA) player, but she is staying focused on her job of helping us win games," Weatherspoon said. "I appreciate what she brings to the table because she is working as hard as she can every day in practice and you never have to worry about her academics. She's one of those kids that when she leaves here, you know she will be a success in life."

FRANKLIN , La. - The Louisiana Tech women's basketball team made an important detour Saturday as the Lady Techsters departed New Orleans en route to Baton Rouge where they will face the LSU Tigers at 3 p.m. Sunday in a game that will be televised live on Cox Sports Television.
Teresa Weatherspoon and Co. - who are coming off an impressive 78-72 win at Tulane Friday night - headed southwest on US 190 out of the Big Easy mid-Saturday morning with a destination and purpose in mind that had nothing to do with the game of basketball.
Around noon the Louisiana Tech University bus pulled up to The Crossing Place Ministry in Franklin where a crowd of hundreds of family, friends and even strangers were already gathered.
Everyone in attendance had one ultimate goal in mind - to try to help Yvonne Johnson, the mother of Lady Techster forward Adrienne Johnson who is battling skin cancer.
Every player, coach and support staff member with the Louisiana Tech travel party joined hundreds of others in participating in the bone marrow registry in an effort to find a match for Mrs. Yvonne.
"The team participating meant a lot to me because I know they are behind me and my family," Adrienne Johnson said. "I didn't expect anything less because we are all family, and we all have each other's backs. By them joining the bone marrow registry, it gives my mom a better chance of finding a match. The more people that we had participate, the better.
"The community of Franklin was so excited to see Coach Weatherspoon, the staff and the Lady Techster players. I am so thankful for each and every one of them for participating."
Yvonne Johnson was diagnosed with skin cancer a few years ago after Adrienne had already begun her collegiate playing career at Louisiana Tech. Despite the emotionally and physically draining treatments that she continues to receive, Yvonne doesn't miss a beat when it comes to supporting her daughter and her teammates.
"It felt good knowing that we could be a part of the drive today," said Louisiana Tech senior Tarkeisha Wysinger-Mackey. "Even though I've only known Mrs. Yvonne for four years, it seems like much longer than that. She treats all of us as if we were her own.
"I remember as a freshman when she came to Ruston and cooked gumbo for our apartment. Although she has been battling this disease, she has never stopped supporting Adrienne or any of us in every way possible. I hope that everyone that took part in the drive understands how important it is."
During the two hours that the Lady Techsters spent in Franklin on Saturday, they were able to take part in the bone marrow registry which consisted of each one of them filling out registration paperwork and undergoing mouth swabs.
It was all done in an effort to support the Johnson family in their time of need.
"This was a great day of giving back," Weatherspoon said. "It was more of a family atmosphere for us as Adrienne is part of our family. Today was about giving back.
When you can do that it, it's so positive. This had nothing to do with basketball. It had to do with us trying to help another human being. The most important thing we did today was try to help save a life. We want to teach our kids to give back and be willing participants when someone is in need."
Yvonne will be one of a number of members of the Johnson family and the community of Franklin that will be in attendance Sunday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center when Louisiana Tech faces LSU.
And although for two hours the focus will be on Adrienne and the Lady Techsters competing and representing Louisiana Tech on the basketball floor, every one of the young ladies donning a jersey with LA Tech across the front learned on Saturday that life is about more than a game.
Techsters host Be The Match donor drive Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

Yvonne Johnson's battle with skin cancer has been well publicized this year.
The mother of Louisiana Tech senior forward Adrienne Johnson has been a mainstay at Lady Techster home games during the last four years, never missing a game despite her fight with the illness.
And thanks to her daughter's public stage of playing college basketball for one of the most storied program's in the history of the game, Yvonne's story has received press across the state.
However, Yvonne Johnson is not alone in her fight with this disease and similar ones.
Every year, more than 10,000 patients in the U.S. are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma, and their best or only hope of a cure is a transplant from an unrelated adult donor or umbilical cord blood unit.
And most patients (about 70 percent) in need of a transplant do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on the Be The Match Registry®, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), to find a match.
This Saturday, the Louisiana Tech basketball team is sponsoring a "Be The Match With the Lady Techsters" in honor of Yvonne Johnson and the tens of thousands of people in this country who are in need of a match.
From noon until 2 p.m. in the concourse of the Thomas Assembly Center, Tech fans and any individuals in the area are encouraged to participate in this easy, pain-free event. Members of the Louisiana Tech Lady Techster Tipoff Club will be helping on Saturday.
Individuals interested in participating are asked to come to the Thomas Assembly Center during the two-hour time period. To join, people need to be between the ages of 18 - 60, willing to donate to any patient in need, and meet health guidelines. Registration involves completing a health history form and giving a swab of cheek cells.
"Obviously, Yvonne Johnson's situation sparked the team's interest and involvement," said Mary LeSeuer, Account Executive for Be The Match Registry. "They have really embraced the program. Their efforts could not only possibly help Mrs. Johnson, but any number of patients across the country who have access to our database. We are just so appreciative of their efforts."
The event is similar to the one that the Lady Techster basketball coaches, players, and support staff participated in down in Franklin, La. - home of the Johnson's - on Dec. 18 when the team was traveling from New Orleans to Baton Rouge to face LSU the next day.
"The team participating in December meant so much to me and my family," Adrienne Johnson said. "I didn't expect anything less because we are all family. I really want to encourage people to come out this Saturday and participate. It's easy and pain-free and a chance for people to possibly help others. The more people that participate in the drive, the better the chance of finding a match for my mom and for anyone else who is battling this disease."
The Be The Match Registry provides access to 9 million potential donors and more than 185,000 cord blood units. Through partnerships with international registries, the NMDP provides additional access to more than 7.5 million donors and 365,000 cord blood units.
A patient's likelihood of having a donor on the Be The Match Registry who is willing and able to help save a life is estimated to range from 66 percent to 93 percent, depending on race or ethnicity.
