Jindal: UNO and Southern University should consider merger

"Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal says he will ask the State Board of Regents to consider merging the University of New Orleans and Southern University of New Orleans. "

"Jindal also is asking the Board of Regents to consider whether that merged campus should then be moved away from the LSU and Southern systems that currently govern them, and into the University of Louisiana System."

Baby steps. Good. SUNO has a 5% graduation rate.

"The idea of a merger is politically explosive and has run into complaints and charges of racism most times it has even been suggested in past years."

SUNO ranks #1 in Washington Monthly's America's Worst College Rankings; LSUS ranks #27

Southern-Shreveport needs to be dissolved into LSUS and BPCC.

But, it is a black school, and will only identify as that and it is "racist" to do anything but let it do what it wants.

Doesn't sound good to me. I don't mind the idea of merging the two schools, but I don't like the idea of putting the new school in the ULS system. Even more ways to divide the money. . .

Do we know how much funding Tech earned that the UL System redirected away from us?

I guess the question would be will the funding they have follow them? It would do absolutely no good to consolidate and move them and not move their funding into the ULS coffers.

Re: Jindal: UNO and Southern University should consider merger

Maybe Jindal's next move should be to announce that LA Tech will be moved from the Univ of LA system to the more affluent LSU system, and as a result, LSU-S can (and will) be merged under the purview of LA Tech and called LA Tech-Shreveport.

Again, if the state of Louisiana is serious about cutting costs in higher education, this seems like a no brainer to me. Seems futile to continue paying for all those duplicate administrative costs just to keep a school with at 15% graduation rate (LSU-S) going.

    Excerpt:
"SUNO’s 2009-10 Annual Report indicates its budget is $40.3 million, and it cannot even produce a statistic on its classroom usage – a statistic a student worker can generate with Microsoft Excel and a course catalog. That $40.3 million for 3,100 students comes to a staggering $13,000 in per-student cost per year; average tuition at SUNO is about $1,760, which means taxpayers of one stripe or another are subsidizing over $11,000 in student costs at a school which graduates between five and six percent of its students in six years."

Wow. So besides the race card, what is their justification for staying independent (or even open for that matter)?

"Of course, commentary from the general public is all over the place. The pro-UNO crowd has taken Sen. Ben Never’s suggestion that the SUNO-UNO merger be coupled with statewide consolidation efforts and carried that to suggestions that LSU and Southern be merged in Baton Rouge, while the UNO-SUNO merger is being held up by more left-wing folks as another piece of evidence that Jindal is out to destroy public education in Louisiana so as to keep the state’s population stupid and poor."

"A merger of SUNO and UNO will require two-thirds majorities in both houses of the state legislature after the Regents sign off on it. That would constitute an uphill climb, one which in normal fiscal circumstances would face long odds of success. But with a $1.6 billion deficit to make up this year, things are politically possible which normally would not be – and the merger may have a fighting chance of approval."

"The governor talks about graduation rates. I'm real sick and tired about graduation rates. Graduation rates mean nothing. Southern University was not developed to graduate people. It was developed to give people with the social economic disadvantage and discriminatory practices by the state of Louisiana the opportunity to get a higher education. It has nothing to do with how many people we graduate. We don't have to graduate anybody from this university. But we have the opportunity, the opportunity that has been historically denied African-American people and socially disadvantaged people in this country and in the state. Louisiana has a very bad history of denying people of color an education."
    -Randolph Scott, SUNO Alumni President
