Some great bs excuses for what it "really might be for.
Interesting. I wonder if they're actually going to start letting their pilots have some flight time (and hence acquire some aviation skills) or if they're just going to plan for 40-60% losses for routine operations. I guess it's a good thing for Chinese aviators that it will be one of the longest flight decks in the world (per the chart on the linked article).

Another reason why I said the military is $23-billion short on the graph thread.

Do not forget that Klinton-algore sold missle guidance technology to the Chicoms back in 1996. When caught (and of course had that been a Repub Admin there would have been actual consequences for the treasonous act), the Klinton admin said, well they wanted to make sure Chicom intercontinental ballistic missles would be accurate so they would hit their intended military targets and not stray into civilian areas, killing non-combatants. Oh! Gee, thanks.

Might as well has made money off of it. They would have invaded Taiwan, or at the least sent several "spies" to steal some. By selling them to them, and if they were smart (I doubt it), they had the opportunity to rig them.

I wouldn't include Russia on that list. Yes, they are being more aggressive in international politics, but they mainly want nothing more than their "buffer zone" they had during the Soviet years. I don't see them taking it by force for now (South Ossetia was an intervention more than an invasion), and they are still pissed they "can't" take back Chechnya the way they want. They want to be half of what the US has been the last 70 years since they see China's ambition and though they (Russia) are "protected" against them, don't want to piss them off. BUT, Russia knows they could control the European markets (see the time they cut off oil going through Ukraine) and really want that control. In this "new world" of not invading countries because we've "evolved" beyond such madness, that is the only way to effectively control an area now. China will have the Asian, Pacific, and most of the American Market (north and south). Russia would take Europe, some of Africa, and a part of the American Market (chiefly north). Iran wouldn't be a player and neither China nor Russia would be afraid to say "screw this, blow those ******* off the planet". North Korea would keep on truckin' the way they are unless South Korea also collapse.

China's number one priority is steady economic development, and they are going to do everything the can to get an advantage economically, and are not going to do anything (e.g., invade Taiwan) that jeopardizes that. So, they are investing heavily in underdeveloped areas, particularly those with hard-to-get but untapped natural resources. They are creating an economic network of poor countries, gaining controlling interest wherever possible on natural resources, and creating political dependence that they can exploit in global organizations such as WHO and UN. Naturally, they are also interested in updating their military to serve the same mission we require of our military: to provide the muscle to protect our economic interests all over the world. As their global economic reach expands, so will their perceived need for global military reach.

Thing that concerns me most about China is how difficult it must be to engage in meaningful espionage in a homogenous culture.

A little naivete imo, but that just my 2cents. I suppose all those shoulder fired missiles that are unaccounted for in Libya will wind up in the good guys hands. The one thing I do agree on is that China and Russia to a lesser degree are defnitely trying to up the ante economically and are trying to strenghen their position in the O&G and mineral world all as a strategic move. Patience is our enemies strong suit and not a particular American strong trait.

Guess we know why China was so interested in the crashed helicopter from the Bin Laden raid.

The blog itself looks pretty interesting as far as information and pictures of China's buildup go.
