yep, family coming in to rayville from jackson headed to dallas, 1/4 tank of gas, sees sign in Rayville, "Bucees 45 miles ahead you can hold it", that dude and crew will pass up monroe, stay on the interstate and slide into Tarbutton road on fumes. Def going to pull folks that would normally stop in monroe, miden or shreveport. For local businesses, I don't think they'll see much of a negative impact at all. I imagine locals like myself will continue to buy gas and small store items at the same stores we do now.
With it being on the Tarbutton exit, for most locals you will have to be going there to get there. Should have minimal impact on anything except maybe at the Tech exit and on Tech drive north of campus.
But it is close enough that some locals will go there from maybe once a week to once a month for the specialty items.
West Monroe to Ruston is a natural stop for those driving from Birmingham West or those driving Dallas East.
West Monroe and Ruston have wisely taken full advantage. However Buc-ee's is just an amazing deal!
One more thing...Anybody who drives Louisiana often knows that the traffic on I-49 is NOTHING compared to the traffic on 1-20. No trucks is probably THE most overlooked thing about Buc-ee's.
Don't understand this Buc-ees obsession. It's a big convenience store, nothing more. But hey, more power to 'em and they should ride this fad for as long as they can.
Lots of upset businessmen and women at the police jury meeting last night. For multiple reasons, but Bucee’s was one of them.
Typical small time, small town reaction when competition hits town. Buc-ee's shouldn't threaten businesses that are smart and realistic to change. The buggy industry griped about the auto industry birth. Change is inevitable. It's how it is adapted is key. Wal Mart meant the death of many mom and pop businesses, but the consumer wanted more. It can be cruel but it happens. The good-old boy network is upset, but Buc-ees is a novelty that has a niche, and normally doesn't displace strong businesses.
Mainly, they are going to increase our need for infrastructure while giving up the sales tax revenue to develop said infrastructure. And inevitably, we will all see our property tax or local sales tax increase again to pay for it. Ruston will soon be at 12.5% sales tax, IMO.
That’s what happened with the ball park. Not self sustaining, so our “leadership” increased the tax on hotels and restaurants to try to cover some of the shortfall.
Made a trip to the DFW airport on Tuesday.
Terrell has 84 pumps of 3 nozzles each. (52 and 32 under the two coverings).
Terrell to Tarbutton is 240 miles. Tarbutton to Leeds, Ala. is 400 miles.
QT dominated the gas sign lows from WM to DFW on my trip Tuesday. $2.78/gal at the QT. The Terrell Beaver? $2.73.
Loss Leader gas pricing will be interesting. It's all about the gasoline and multitude of bathroom spaces at the Bucee's,
(An aside, a couple of years ago when Tech played at Texas, I stopped at the Buccees in Temple. This was the first time I had ever seen a Buc-ee's bathroom line (women's side only), backed up halfway to the t-shirt rack before the cash registers. Come to find out there was another game that day at Baylor . . . the same distance the other way north up the interstate to Waco.
PS-The in/out traffic flow at the I-10 store just north of Orange Beach/Gulf Shores is just horrible.
Leeds has been more of a hassle than Temple in my I-20 stops.
Whomever owned the original land there at Terrell between I-20 to Ft. Worth and US-80 to Dallas made bank. The developer of the whole intersection is making even more bank with all the big name franchises being anchored there now.
PSS-Lamar Outdoor needs to be scouting out sites for new billboards for Bucee's (and local businesses who want to advance their brand to the slowed down traffic).
