Nelson is about 160 miles as the crow flies from Christchurch.
The USGS "Did you feel it?" map has a response from Nelson indicating intensity I (not felt). Hope that report is accurate.
Just coming up on 5:00 pm Tuesday afternoon in New Zealand at 10:00 pm CT Monday with the 19-hour time difference.
updated...watching TV3 live video stream....major damage in the Christchurch central business district. The quake was centered very close to Christchurch and was very shallow (only about 3 miles deep)

Talked to the WBB ofice this morning and they said all of Yellie's folks were okay............Thank the Good Lord
Kiwi and family were the first I thought of when I heard the news. My nephew's in-laws live in New Zealand, but on the other side of the country.
Thanks for the update.
Hey everyone, thanks for all the enquiries and I'm really sorry for not checking in sooner. We were on the road the past few days and just got home now. No one we knew had any major tragedy due to the earthquake (that we know of so far, at least). The TV coverage is pretty intense and there were some pretty awful scenes and stories. The death count is certain to climb as they sort through the rubble and there were reports of people getting limbs amputated in order to set them free.
Jelena is pretty upset even though she doesn't know anyone that was hit hard (again, so far, at least). First year away at school halfway across the world, if she was ever going to feel homesick, this is the time
Unfortunately this one is way worse in terms of destruction and suffering. The reason is that it happened much close to the city center (where there is obviously more potential to cause damage) and it was also much shallower beneath the surface (only 3 miles deep compared to 20 miles deep for the other one)
Also, this one happened in the middle of a business day when the center was packed as opposed to 4am for the other one. This one was way worse, and it's not even close
The pictures on the news here look pretty bad. They said it happened literally under the city.
I talked to Jelena after practice last night, she seemed okay, she said that she didn't know anyone that was affected directly that she knew of. They had a hard practice getting mentally ready for this week and she seemed really focused on the games ahead.
Glad yall are safe Kiwi. Wishing NZ the best in these times of peril. Godspeed!
I have a friend and Tech grad living there. His parents are visiting him from Shreveport. According to facebook, they are all safe but have damage to the house and are still experiencing aftershocks. Important thing is that they are safe.
Here's a site I use at least once a week.
