The Good News:
Coach Terry Burrows is making good on some promises he made regarding building this program back to respectability, having gone from 13 wins in 2008 to 21 in 2009 and now 31 in 2010. Keep it up Cap’n. Jace Peterson has become the new Matt Szczur of college sports: an All American candidate at SS and also a defensive back on the football team, where he made 30 tackles, two sacks and four pass breakups. He’ll team with OF Lee Orr (.300-17-56) to lead the offense. This year’s team will be pitching heavy as 407 of last year’s 505 total innings return to the staff. Keep an eye on RHP Matt Click, who was only 2-5/6.66, but had nine saves and also RHP Dustin Lloyd who went 4-6, 5.88 as the most-used arm on the staff. Both should improve their numbers.
.
The Bad News:
Despite all the improvement, there were still some teeth-gnashing moments last season, including one-run losses at LSU and at Arkansas (twice, actually). Beyond Jace Peterson and Lee Orr, most of the potent bats have left the program, including four .299+ hitters. The fielding was the best in the Southland last season, but will need to replace three of four starters and find a new catcher to bark the orders for the defense. The pitching will need to step things up as well, since they were 10th in the Southland (6.52 team ERA) and were 2nd-to-last in strikeouts (330Ks) last year. If we come out of thie 6-1, that would be a great start. I can't remember the last time we swept in Lake Charles.
anyone know if there will be any video for the games this weekend?

Scouting the Cowboys
Friday will mark the 122nd meeting between the Bulldogs and the Cowboys of McNeese State. Louisiana Tech owns a 76-45 all-time record against McNeese while head coach Wade Simoneaux boasts a 15-8 record during his tenure at Tech. However, of those 15 wins, only three have come in Lake Charles with the last coming during the 2005 season.
The Cowboys return 20 lettermen from a 2010 squad that finished the season with 31-27 record and a 16-10 mark in games played inside Cowboy Diamond. Head Coach Terry Burrows' squad returns all three of their weekend starters from last season, all of which are expected to pitch against the Bulldogs.
McNeese State returns two all-Southland Conference performers in Jace Peterson (first team) and Lee Orr (third team). Peterson hit .353 last season while driving in 49 runs and hitting four home runs. Additionally, the junior tied a school record with 35 stolen bases during the 2010 campaign. Orr, a junior from Louise, Texas, has totaled 32 home runs in just two seasons with the Cowboys. Last season, the right fielder hit 17 homers and drove in 56 runs en route to hitting at a .286 average.
On the mound this weekend, the Cowboys will feature a veteran pitching staff that is led by Jaden Dillon. Last season, Dillon posted a perfect 8-0 record, including a 6-0 mark against conference opponents. Out of the pen, the Cowboys rely on closer Matt Click who tallied a 2-5 record last season with a record-tying nine saves.
RHP Zach Butler is expected to get the starting nod on Friday night against Trevor Petersen. Against Rhode Island last weekend, the senior tossed 7.0 innings, walked three batters and fanned five in a winning effort. Both Dillon and Sunday starter, Dustin Lloyd, were saddled with losses. Lloyd has made two appearances this season while allowing 12 hits and eight runs over 8.1 innings of work.
As a team, McNeese has stolen nine bases on 11 attempts with Peterson leading the way with five steals. Defensively, the Cowboys have committed nine errors on the season while turning two double plays.

McNeese is a Louisiana school. That means they have access to tremendous local talent. It also means that they'll get fired up when they play Tech, and they will play over their heads. And it's BASEBALL! In the majors the best teams lose 50-60 games every year.
I agree with Dwayne. Given that Tech baseball has sucked for about 3 decades and McNeese likely is as talented as we are....I'll be thrilled with 2 of 3 too.
