Congrats to Clint!



Thirty NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates today for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Amongst the 30 candidates, Louisiana Tech catcher Clint Ewing was named to the list. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

Ewing, a 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, established career-highs with 62 hits, 49 RBI, 11 home runs and a .350 batting average last season as he was named second team all-WAC. As one of five seniors on the Bulldogs' roster this season, the Shreveport native and civil engineering major currently boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Classroom
Ewing maintains a 4.0 GPA in civil engineering and last year was named a third-team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American. He also received the Outstanding Junior Award, which is presented by the College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech. As a member of the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering honor society, Ewing was the recipient of the Chi Epsilon’s National Scholarship for the Southwest District. In addition to being a two-time member of the academic All-Western Athletic Conference baseball team, Ewing has received the Presidential Scholarship — the highest honor awarded to non-National Merit scholars — and the Department of Transportation and Development engineering scholarship.

Character
Ewing is one of six seniors for Louisiana Tech on the 2011 roster. Because of his leadership displayed both on and off the field, he has been deemed a co-captain for the upcoming season. Showing his dedication to Bulldog baseball, Ewing persevered through a second-degree ankle sprain that was diagnosed early last season and managed to start 51 games behind the plate while seeing action in 53 contests. Statistically, 2010 was a career-best for Ewing.

Community
Although competing at a high-level as a Division I student-athlete and maintaining a perfect GPA in the classroom can be demanding, Ewing finds time give back to the community. As an academic tutor at Louisiana Tech, Ewing has volunteered the last four years at the local chapter of the Lions Club for their annual BBQ and fundraising efforts. Furthermore, he assists with the Methodist Children’s Home’s annual Christmas party. In the summer of 2010, Ewing was an instructor at the Vitaminwater Revive Youth Clinic at the College World Series. The clinic is a community-outreach program that connects youth with the College World Series and provides them with resources designed to have a lasting effect. While an instructor, Ewing taught various aspects of fitness, healthy lifestyles and sportsmanship to youth ranging from ages 8-16. In addition to his work on the national level, Ewing has worked multiple summer and winter baseball camps at Louisiana Tech.

Competition
Statistically, Ewing’s numbers have exponentially increased each season. After belting 11 home runs, 49 RBI and hitting .350 last season, he enters the 2011 season as an All-American candidate after garnering second-team All-WAC honors last season. Offensively, Ewing ranked amongst the WAC leaders in nearly every offensive category last season. He was instrumental in the 2010 squad shattering school records for hits (697), runs (484), doubles (141) and RBI (441). Behind the plate Ewing gunned down 16 runners, which ranked second amongst conference backstops.

When Clint was at Capt. Shreve High School in Shreveport he had all "A"s except for one class his Senior year in the Shreve's Engineering Magnet Program. He was chosen Athlete of the Week on KTBS Channel 3 his Senior year and I remember how much he was looking forward to going to TECH to play ball and going thru their engineering program-considering how they travel so much in the WAC what an accomplishment. GREAT YOUNG MAN!!!
