    Scouting da Bears
Friday will mark only the eighth time that Baylor and Louisiana Tech have met on the diamond. Overall, the Bears have taken four of the prior seven meetings, however, the Bulldogs own a 3-2 record in games played at Baylor Ballpark.

The Bears return eight position starters and a total of 11 pitchers from a 2010 squad that posted a 36-24 record before ultimately ending their season in the Fort Worth Regional Championship game against TCU.

Baylor has faced a difficult schedule thus far, boasting series wins over Oral Roberts, Georgia, and perennial power, Rice. Logan Verrett anchors the weekend rotation while Trent Blank, Josh Turley, and Tyler Bremer will factor into this weekend’s rotation. Freshman Trae Davis has been utilized in the setup roll this season, earning three of Baylor’s seven wins. Duel standout Brooks Pinckard has been utilized in a closing role this season and features a plus fastball and a slider as an out pitch.

Offensively, Pinckard leads the attack for the Bears in a lead-off role. The junior leads the team with 11 stolen bases and currently hits at a .370 clip. Joey Hainsfurther and Max Muncy are two stalwarts in the offensive attack and both feature a .360-plus average.

As a staff, the Bears have only allowed three home runs and have fanned 80 batters to only 50 walks. Defensively, Baylor has turned 11 double plays while committing just 12 errors.

If any team owes us some games in Ruston it's these guys. Playing 9 of the 11 games in Waco and none of them in Ruston is total B.S. Who do they think they are, Texas??

I agree, but we needed to be asking for return games years ago. Since the NCAA did the big boys all a favor, we will be lucky to ever get a bcs conference school back to Ruston.

Baylor has been asked several times and each time laughed. Baylor is one of top baseball programs like a Oklahoma and Alabama are in football. Do you really think you would get an Auburn or Alabama in football to come to to Ruston.....that's what I thought. So we go to these places in baseball just like football outmanned in overall talent. Have to have a sensational pitching performance to have a chance in winning a game for a normal weekend series (3 games). Baylor's #1 arm has been seen by many scouts repeatedly in addition, to other players. They were checking on when he was throwing every week in the fall as well.

    Re: 3/10 Baylor game 1

    - BAYLOR (6-5)
    2010 RPI: 34
    Starters Returning: 6
    Weekend Starters: 1
    Mid-Week Starters: 1
    Key Relievers (20+inns.): 4
    .
    All Conference Candidates:
    RHP/OF Brooks Pinckard (2-4, 2.45, 12svs, .259OBA/.305, 18SBs)
    RHP Logan Verrett (5-3, 3.28, .257OBA)
    1B Max Muncey (.301-11-53)
    OF Logan Vick (.329-10-27)
    3B Joey Hainsfurther (.339)
    .
    The Good News:
BU had some spotty play early on, but ended up going to the championship game in both the Big 12 Tournament and Regional weekend to finish the ‘10 season on a high note. Coach Steve Smith goes into the 2011 season with five .300+ hitters coming back, including most of the power sources (like Logan Vick and Max Muncey) and most of the speed merchants (like Vick and Brooks Pinckard). Also, the defense, which was .968 last season, returns three of four infield starters, including a solid left side in Joey Hainsfurther and SS Landis Ware (.275-6-38). Additionally, Chris Slater hit .341 in part-time duty last year. One of the biggest off-season developments was seeing ace reliever Brooks Pinckard turn down the Cubs as an 18th round draft pick and come back to campus. The Bears hope that 1B/DH Dan Evatt (.210 in 16 starts) can revert to his 2009 form where he went .308-7-31 at the dish. There is a lot of promise for the future as Max Muncey and Logan Vick both earned Frosh All American honors last year and pitchers Tyler Bremer (a JC All American who was drafted by the Cubs last season), Trae Davis (29th round pick of the Rangers) and Dillon Newman (49th round pick of the Mets), all righties, are highly lauded arms that can throw low-90s heat. Though there may be some grumbling from rabid Bears fans, the program will be on the uptick.
    .
    The Bad News:
Even though the Bears made the NCAAs again in 2010, it still feels like they are on a bit of a cold streak. Since that 2005 CWS squad, the Bears have won 37, 35, 32, 30, and 36 games each successive season. Not bad. But not exactly what the patient Bears fans wanna see. This year’s squad will have to get over its road woes as BU was just 5-11 in true road games last season. The pitching staff will need some holes plugged, as Shawn Tolleson, Craig Fritsch and Willie Kempf combined for 33 starts and 230 innings on the mound last season, and have all matriculated to pro ball now. A new backstop to handle the staff will need to step up as Greg Glime, who started 146 games behind the dish in his career has moved on as well.
    .
    Schedule Note:
    More road tested than normal.
As mentioned above, the Bears weren’t a great team when away from Baylor Ballpark, and that will be tested this time around as they’ll go to Georgia for three games and at the Houston College Classic against Houston, Utah and Rice in the second and third weekends of the season. The Big 12 slate could be a tough wrap-up, going to Nebraska, to Okie State and at home against Oklahoma the last three weeks.

    Re: 3/10 Baylor game 1

Interesting pitching line-up for the 4-game series. On Thursday night, we will be throwing our ace Trevor Petersen, and Baylor will be throwing a weekday starter/middle reliever. On Friday night, freshman Chris Sadberry will make his first career appearance for Tech, and Baylor will be throwing their ace Logan Verrett, the 51st-ranked best player in college baseball. That makes Game 1 a "must win" game for the Dawgs.

Announcer just said Baylor was opening a 14 game homestand. I think lsu's opening homestand was even more. These guys have it made now.

Baylor announcers are very good so far.

It's the same way for basketball, too. The BC$ schools don't play on the road.

I like how they have a color commentator in addition to the play-by-play guy.

Ewing has our lone hit through 5 innings.

Baylor picks up 2 more runs in the 2nd.
