Mechelle Voepel: Life is grand for Lady Techsters
That is one awesome article!!
Being a true blue Techster fan is grand!
Great article.
Excellent Article!
See the BOLDED comment above from the article."It really pleases me to see this program where it is now," he (Leon Barmore) said. "To win 1,000 games and be mentioned with Tennessee, that's pretty special. Both programs really set themselves apart early with defense and rebounding."
But Tech's fans set themselves apart, too. Womens basketball became a point of pride for Louisiana Tech and a tradition that was passed down for generations of fans, male and female. Everyone who cares about womens sports should celebrate Tech's 1,000th win, to pay tribute to a program that has meant so much to athletics for girls and women.
"You couldn't get a ticket," Mulkey recalled of her time as a player at Tech. "People stood up at our games until the opposing team scored. And I remember one game in particular, it went on forever. We felt like, 'Gosh, should we let them score so our fans can sit down?'
THAT'S why the Lady Techsters will ALWAYS have a very special place in the hearts of Americans who care about womens athletics. The Lady Techster basketball program is bigger than just being "another basketball team". The Lady Techsters have achieved a very special place in American sports, because the program was a catalyst in terms of offering American women equal opportunities in athletics, and equal access to what had (to that time) been only a traditional men's sport.
The success of the Lady Techsters helped give American women access to a whole new frontier of opportunities that are mostly taken for granted today. From being one of the first womens programs to compete on national TV (1979), to helping womens basketball earn the right to be certified as an NCAA sport (1983), to having some of the first players to earn "national recognition" in every media market in America (3 Wade Trophy winners in the '80's), the Lady Techsters have left an indelible footprint on this American game.
And that, my friends, is a fete the LA Tech men's program will never be able to duplicate. All LA Tech fans should understand this, be very proud of it, and embrace it.

Saw the article last night and it brought back a lot of fond memories for me. I've always been proud of this program since I was a kid and it's been heartbreaking not seeing us in or at the top of the polls these last several years. Here's to hoping we can keep things going in the right direction and climb back to the top where we belong. 1001 is going to be a tough one but I'm looking forward to it.
I've said it before and ill say it again. We have found the right coach!
