Nothing seems to change at Tech regarding the promotion and planning for events such as these. It seems that success surprises us. We have known for quite a few months that we were hosting this event and the pep rally looks like an event thrown together at the last minute. The tournament invitation event was done in the usual manor where the team and special guest are at Dr. Reaneau's house to watch the program - why not have it at Tolliver using the big screens where the public, Hoop Troop, and student body could be involved? Just an example of an idea to change things up so our fan base grows and gets excited.
Back in the '90's when the Techsters would be going to post season on an annual basis, we still had no preplanning for the event relative to the tournament invitation event, fan travel, pep rallies, etc. If you didn't live in Ruston, you were just left out. I learned to call immediately after the announcement of an invitation to get included - do all fans of programs have to work hard to be included?
I have been to all the WAC basketball tournaments, except 1, and there has never been any organized social for those in attendance. It is rare for any Tech representative to circulate through the stands to acknowlege those in attendance. What a lost opportunity for relationship building! It is also fact that only about half of the Tech reps in attendance even wear Tech gear.
How about using the Alumni data base to notify the Tech alumni in the geographic area where Tech is playing to come support the team and visit with the Tech admin? This could be done for all road games for many of the sports. Just meet at the team's hotel bar for meet and greet.
We should be laying out the plan for the upcoming sports year calendar in the summer where events (known and possible i.e. post-season play, conference tournaments) are planned in advance. We should identify where we want the Hoop Troop to attend and budget and/or raise the money. It would keep us from missing all those free opportunities to develop and maintain fan support. We just keep on doing the same old nothing.
