    Rice, UT-San Antonio schedule home-and-home

Signs of the times and of up and coming UT-San Antonio. They will make a great conference mate, provide a fertile recruiting area for Texas exposure and is a great place to travel to my friends.

100% AGREED. It'll take'em a few years, but Coker is a good recruiter and coach. He's got lots of West Texas football experience. Who knows, we may have a tie into a little bowl game there.

Doesn't Rice realize that UTSA is just a lowly FCS football team that is just starting the transition to the FBS Division? The students and citizens at San Antonio aren't going to support UTSA or bring many travelers to the game at Rice. Rice should schedule quality opponents that will bring the fanbase to their home games. If nothing else, Rice should have negotiated a 2-for-1 deal with UTSA. Their AD is an idiot and should be fired.

and boom goes the dynamite. And since when did everyone get all excited about anything rice does? yes i know they have great academics and a good baseball team but other than that the athletics and facilities suck. Has anyone watched a basketball game in the hs gym that usually has a curtain up and a better intramural game going on the other side?

They are indeed. UTSA just signed their second deal with a CUSA football team (Houston & Rice). They are located in a major American city with a huge market deep in the heart of football country and will be hosting games in the Alamodome for at least 5 years. If UTSA keeps building up their program, they would be a easy fit into the Western Division of Conference USA.

Then again, with the deals UTSA has signed with Big 12 teams (Oklahoma State, Kansas State, & Baylor), the school's ultimate aim might be higher than an invite to Conference USA.

    ...or the Big 12.

If CUSA or the Big12 or the MWC is looking for market we can't compete. Most of us realized that years ago.

Exactly how does getting in bed with an up and coming program help us again? Oh, I know...

In ten years we can say, "Yeah we used to play UT-San Antonio and South Alabama before they even had a football team."

Maybe you should check out UT-San -Antonio's future schedules a little harder.

Re: Rice, UT-San Antonio schedule home-and-home

Unless the Big12 changes in membership significantly (as in Texas schools leaving) UTSA will not ever be invited. They didn't invite TCU because they already control the DFW market much like they already control SA and Austin now. If they aren't inviting Rose Bowl champions they aren't gonna be inviting UTSA.

BUT, let's say if UT goes Indy and A&M goes to the SEC for instance then all bets are off.

Considering CUSA's track record they would have a great shot there. We need to watch our backs. And pound them when we play them.

And given the fact that they are about to be our conference mates I think it's fine we are scheduling games with them. We're gonna play 'em anyways and like Tyler said it's a fun trip and good recruiting grounds.

In the end it probably won't matter because it will end up being a WAC game rather than non-conference. Which means we need to be looking to fill those dates again.

I've played intramural games on both sides of the curtain! They even have another court that's connected to the swimming pool that's connected to their basketball gym. Also, their tiny student exercise/work-out facility is connected to their basketball gym. Instead of hanging championship banners and retired numbers from the rafters, Rice hangs banners honoring Rhodes Scholars! However, I heard one of their WBB coaches telling a recruit they were building a new arena for basketball. This was almost 4 years ago. Anybody know if they are really building a new basketball arena?

Even though Rice's basketball facility sucks, their baseball facility is amazing, and their tennis and track facilities are nice, too. Many people don't like their football facilities, but I think they are better than Tech's football facilities.

They have not built a new facility, but they did spend $23 million to renovate Rice Gymnasium (now the Tudor fieldhouse).
