If we go big time, then I hope that some of these guys are interested (top assistants at successful big time programs) -
I personally like this guy (current salary - less than $300K):

I don't think I like bringing in an assistant. We just had a "career assistant" and how did that work out ?? I'd rather see us bring in a H.C. (from some level) with a WINNING record who expects/demands success.
I say we lure Tom Penders out of retirement.
Me too!! And I'm not saying that I don't want that particular coach to be hired. I'd like to see who is available first. I do place an importance on who you beat/level of competition. But it isn't the only thing I look for. He might be the best candidate. The level of competition would certainly keep me from saying hire him, he's the very best candidate on day #1 though. That's jumping the gun just a little bit. Let's see who is out there.
Yeah! Don't waste the money & let this man get started immrdiately. And that's assuming that he would accept the job. Remember guy's, money is not everything to some people & moving to Ruston from Shreveport is huge culture shock. Nothing against Ruston. I learned to love it after some time but it is difficult to go from operating at 100 miles an hour to 15 miles an hour & I'm not talking about work or recruiting. It is a major lifestyle change.
From everything I've been looking at lately, I think we may have to go to a lower division for a coach.
Some of these smaller school coaches are getting paid well because they are basketball schools. This removes these guys from contention.
Some of the smaller school guys that could be interesting have been at their current schools for years. Why would they leave now?
People have mentioned not wanting an assistant.
This leaves us with unemployed coaches, coaches whose flames may be burning out, or a random wild card.
I would rather hire a proven coach from a division lower if it means getting a quality guy. Everyone has to get that step up at some time. I don't want a big name that couldn't hack it at a bigger school. I saw where Pat Knight's name was mentioned. This guy went 50-61 and had 1 winning season.
Some of these good small school programs have former alums or very tenured head coaches surprisingly.
Assistants with good pedigrees are the most likely shot to find the best head coach for a cheaper price. There is a little less of a risk taking a current head coach as he has experience being the guy. However for the most part he also has his limitations. I.E. there are reasons why current head coaches at smaller schools are still at those schools.
For assistants there is the unknown factor which adds to the ability to build a program. The guy could end up being the next great coach. He could be a future Anthony Grant or Brad Stevens. It is easier to find this kind of coach if you look at assistants that have stuck with a big name coach for a certain amount of time. Guys that learn how to coach under current great coaches typically are able to emulate their mentor. And likewise their mentor usually sees in them the ability to be a great coach (which is why he likes keeping them around).
