I'll take Billy Kennedy! Or Jeff Capel. Or John Pelphrey. Both of those last two won at programs that are very similar to Tech. Just didn't really make it at the big time! I'll take a Duke assistant or anyone else who is an assistant at a perennial power! Not a young ASSISTANT at Ole Miss!

FYI Ford, I'm gonna disappear no matter what happens and come back when the next coaching search is. Don't you see when I signed up for this board. I'm pretty sure it was when the last coaching search was.

Why are you using so many explanation points? Are you yelling at me?

Billy Kennedy - not going anywhere until a high-profile job calls
John Pelphrey - is getting a big pay check from Arkansas after being fired with a contract remaining he'll sit out until a high-profile assistant job calls with a higher payday than Tech's $200k-$250k.
Jeff Capel - same story as Pelphrey

You want McDowell, a young head coach at an NAIA school, not much difference than an assistant at a high-major.

Name me one school in the Deep South (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina) that is very good every year. You can't because there isn't one.

The most successful school in the NCAA Tourney from the Deep South is LSU with 24 wins. That ranks LSU #39 in all-time tournament wins. LSU has finished in dead last place in the SEC in the last couple years.

Next there's Georgia Tech with 23 all-time Tourney wins. (#40)
    Then there's Alabama with 20 all-time Tourney wins. (#48)
The next school is Auburn with only 12 all-time Tourney wins. (#66)
Then there's Mississippi State with 11 all-time Tourney wins. (#73)

Note that none of these teams made the 68-team field.

Memphis the city is. At least it has more in common with arkansas ad mississippi than it does tennessee.

Arkansas the state is in the deep south (although fayetville is not) and they have a few final four runs to go with the 94 title.

I do agree with your point though.

Memphis is very similar to our culture, but they still aren't considered part of the Deep South. The Deep South is made up of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

    Top 7 most successful
Deep South programs in the postseason:

    Football Bowl Wins
    1. Alabama
    4. Georgia
    9. Georgia Tech
    9. LSU
    12. Auburn
    12. Ole Miss
    18. Clemson

    College World Series Appearances
    9. LSU
    11. Clemson
    14. South Carolina
    15. Mississippi State
    21. Georgia
    27. Alabama
    33. Auburn
    33. Ole Miss

NCAA DI Men's Basketball Tourney Wins
    39. LSU
    40. Georgia Tech
    48. Alabama
    66. Auburn
    73. Mississippi State
    82. UAB
    91. Clemson

White could be the guy. From his dad's bio page:

Given his background and success, it is not surprising that 17 current or former directors of athletics were mentored by White. That impressive list includes Jim Sterk of Washington State and San Diego State, Tom Boeh of Ohio University and Fresno State, Ian McCaw of Northeastern, Massachusetts and Baylor, Bruce Van De Velde of Utah State, Iowa State and Louisiana Tech, Herman Frazier previously of Hawaii, Rudy Keeling formerly of Emerson and now commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Scott Devine of St. Mary's College (Md.), Tom Collins of Ball State, Tim Van Alstine of Western Illinois, Mark Wilson of Tennessee Tech, Bubba Cunningham of Ball State and Tulsa, Sandy Barbour (who followed him at Tulane) of California-Berkeley, Jim Phillips of Northern Illinois and Northwestern, Bernard Muir of Georgetown and Delaware, Sandy Hatfield Clubb of Drake, Vic Cegles of Long Beach State, and Norwood Teague of Virginia Commonwealth.

I know that, but Memphis is still not considered part of the Deep South. Memphis is kinda its own monster.

Regardless of how you consider Memphis, the Deep South traditionally is great at football and baseball but sucks in men's hoops.

    Deep South

The states in dark red compose the Deep South today. Adjoining areas of East Texas, North Florida, Florida Panhandle and North Central Florida are also sometimes considered part of this subregion.

Arkansas ranks 17th on the all-time NCAA Tourney wins list, and Memphis ranks 27th. However, Arkansas isn't generally considered part of the Deep South. As I posted earlier, I only included teams from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

totally off topic, but there's no way that east texas is deep south, but southern arkansas isn't. Arkansas has always been the deep south in my book...Tennessee too.
