Wow that is really interesting. I had never really kept up with its formation, but just had always heard about developments along the way. It really is cool to think that we have humans living in space for the past 10+ years

Don't forget about the ISS's predecessor, MIR, kw2292.

Tyler, the ISS was being planned, built, and used long before he came into the picture at the 2004 DNC. Even with the shutting down of the shuttle program, the US is still going to use the ISS, but it will be the Russians getting us there.

SpaceX, a US-based, privately funded company, will in all likelihood put a man in space before the shuttle's replacement is ready.

The ISS can trace it's roots to the Reagen and Bush I administrations, just FYI.

And NASA will still pay Russia $63,000,000 to take US astronauts up instead of using American resources.

I meant Obama's instant ditch of the program. The space program fed my family growing up. Dad worked for Boeing and Martin Marrietta in Seatle and New Orleans

I agree. The fact that he wants to cancel going to the moon again, and to look at going to Mars or an asteroid is crazy. Until we are able to produce near light speed, manned travel to even the nearest planets is pretty unfeasible IMHO.

I think it is the process of living that is holding us back more than a mode of transportation.

That was kind of what I was getting at. It took the Mars Rover like 7-8 years to get there, so 14-16 round trip for an astronaut. The amount of oxygen or plants to produce enough oxygen for that duration would be very unlikely to fit in anything that you would fly in space. Not to mention the food and water required.

I think if it weren't for the lack of money and innovation (mainly thoughtfulness), it is entirely possible to do it. Just don't think there are many who would make that commitment. We need to start something though.

It would take 7 months, not 7 years, to fly to Mars, and that's with old technology.

Still quite an undertaking for a manned flight. Yeah, the oxygen, food/water, etc... is a major issue.

We visited the Johnson Space Center...about 10 years ago...when they were building the ISS. Saw those "coke can" shaped modules being built, as well as that X-38 escape ship. Neat to think those very modules we saw are now in orbit.

Sorry, got the units wrong. I guess that would make a big difference...
